Prior to collaborating with Christopher Nolan on “Batman Begins” in 2005, David Goyer was predominantly recognized for his work on a different nocturnal character: Blade. He penned the entire trilogy featuring Wesley Snipes as the daywalking Marvel vampire slayer. Following this, he joined the production team of the unnamed Batman reboot after independent director Nolan, known for his psychological thrillers “Memento” and “Insomnia”, agreed to reshape the Dark Knight on the silver screen and return the character to his original roots in contrast to the campy portrayal in 1997’s “Batman & Robin”.
Warner Bros. assigned David S. Goyer in 2003, as previously planned franchise reboots like “Batman vs. Superman” (originally to be helmed by Wolfgang Petersen from a script penned by Andrew Kevin Walker) and “Batman: Year One” (a film adaptation of Frank Miller’s acclaimed Batman origin story, initially set to be directed by Darren Aronofsky) didn’t materialize at the studio. Later, Goyer collaborated with Christopher Nolan on the story for both “The Dark Knight” in 2008 and “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012; the films were co-written by Nolan along with his brother Jonathan Nolan.

In a recent interview celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Batman Begins,” screenwriter David S. Goyer revealed that his long-time collaborator on three Batman films cautioned him against penning the sequel to follow. Goyer scripted “Man of Steel” in 2013, a Superman reboot directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan (who also contributed to the story), as well as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016, co-written with Chris Terrio, winner of an Oscar for “Argo.” However, his advice-giving collaborator on Batman films advised him against writing that reboot.
In social media conversations, I frequently come across people suggesting that Goyer should write the new Blade, which is Marvel Studios’ long-delayed reboot featuring Mahershala Ali. While a part of me finds this idea intriguing, another part of me worries, ‘I already created what could be considered the definitive Blade, and taking it on again might not be wise.’
Later, he remembered Nolan urging him against working on movies following the Dark Knight trilogy which featured a fresh continuity introducing Ben Affleck as Batman. “Because it’s complicated,” Goyer clarified. “‘We made one, just stay with that.’
In 2013, it was announced that Goyer had agreed to a three-film contract to pen the script for Man of Steel, its sequel, and a Justice League film. The sequel eventually evolved into Batman v Superman, where Affleck’s Dark Knight clashed with Henry Cavill’s Superman character. Later in 2017, the long-awaited Justice League movie was released, with Terrio and Whedon co-writing the script based on a story by Terrio & Snyder.
In the year 2020, Warner Bros. enlisted the services of writers Goyer and Justin Rhodes (from “Terminator: Dark Fate”) to script the Green Lantern Corps movie, which had been announced as part of a 10-movie plan in 2014. This project was described as a space-set version of “Lethal Weapon” featuring characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart. However, this project didn’t come to fruition, but now James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios are planning to bring the Green Lanterns to life on HBO.
Goyer, who previously wrote Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and is working on Apple TV+’s Murderbot and Foundation series, stated that he’s still not involved in a comic-book style project. The finale of his comic book-based work, The Sandman on Netflix, premiering July 3, marks the end of his tenure in the world of comics (for now).
Goyer mentioned he has an upcoming project due next month that isn’t based on comics. He clarified that it falls under the genre category, but it’s not a comic-book adaptation.
