Pillars of Eternity Director Wants Next Mainline Game in Franchise to Have Fully 3D World

In an upcoming game titled “Avowed,” though not a direct sequel to the Pillars of Eternity series, it is set within the same universe. This placement significantly expands and enriches the setting of the Pillars of Eternity series. In an interview with Gamepressure, project director Josh Sawyer discussed potential future developments for the Pillars of Eternity franchise.

One intriguing aspect that could elevate “Pillars of Eternity 3” is the incorporation of a fully realized 3D environment, as suggested by Sawyer. He envisions the upcoming “Pillars of Eternity” game to be enriched with this feature, offering players an enhanced level of immersion and interaction within their surroundings.

He mentioned earlier that some folks might not be thrilled, but he believes that transitioning to a 3D space would help address an issue that’s been in need of improvement.

Additionally, Sawyer points out another apparent comparison – “Baldur’s Gate 3”. He opines that a fully three-dimensional world played a significant role in the game’s critical acclaim. Imagining a game featuring such a world with all the interactivity it would offer, combined with the gameplay mechanics of “Pillars of Eternity 2”, he finds it exceptionally appealing.

Sawyer mentioned, “Since it’s isometric, there’s no real sense of depth, and the environment isn’t particularly dynamic.” He went on to say that when compared to games like BG3, it becomes clear how much depth these mechanics add. He expressed a desire for a game in the future that would incorporate all the Deadfire mechanics, along with more environmental elements, height-based hazards, and dynamically changing terrain. Such a game could be really exciting.

He went on to praise the team’s exceptional work on Deadfire, citing several factors. One idea he proposed for a potential third game was an isometric 3D design similar to Baldur’s Gate 3, which he believed would be both effective and visually striking. He also suggested that this approach would make the art production easier and more dynamic. Previously, he had mentioned this idea, so hopefully everyone will take it in good humor [laughs]. He believes there are numerous exciting possibilities for such a game design.

Deadfire, which continues the story from where the original Pillars of Eternity left off, with your character pursuing the same villain.

Back in 2015, “Pillars of Eternity” – the initial installment, emerged following a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Both this game and its sequel were made accessible on platforms such as PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. In the interim, don’t miss our review for the latest addition to the series – “Avowed” – now playable on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
