If you’re not planning to get a Nintendo Switch 2 this year, you might feel envious about some of its highly anticipated games. Interestingly enough, some of these games were originally intended for the original Nintendo Switch. In an interview on Nintendo’s official website, the creators of “Mario Kart World” disclosed that keeping the game running smoothly on the previous system was challenging due to additional features, such as the increase in 24 simultaneous racers on screen. The developers would have had to sacrifice frame rate and visual quality to make it work on the original Switch 1. Around 2020, they decided to shift the development over to the Nintendo Switch 2 instead.
It appears that, besides Mario Kart World, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment was also conceived for the original Nintendo Switch, as initially reported in an interview with Famitsu (translated by Nintendo Everything). Koei Tecmo’s Yosuke Hayashi disclosed this information. When development moved to a future version of the Switch, Hayashi stated that the developers were able to enhance the game’s frame rate and accommodate more enemies on the screen.
Initially, we worked on this project as a Nintendo Switch game. Later on, we shifted it to be compatible with the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. By moving our existing work to the new platform, we noticed that the number of enemies and frame rate increased significantly, making the game more enjoyable overall. What surprised us was how much the fun factor could be enhanced by upgrading the hardware, Hayashi shared with Famitsu.
The game titled “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” is the third installment in the spin-off series of Hyrule Warriors, blending features from the Zelda franchise with the action mechanics of Dynasty Warriors. The last release was “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity“, which came out in 2020. Although generally well-received, the frame rate of “Age of Calamity” on the original Switch wasn’t perfect. Given this issue, shifting the development of “Age of Imprisonment” to Nintendo Switch 2 seems like a logical move. We’ll have to wait and see how much of an improvement in performance we can expect after the changeover. Here’s hoping that Koei Tecmo can fully utilize the new hardware to enhance the gameplay experience.
