Over time, Adult Swim has consistently expanded its reach, airing on Cartoon Network. Regrettably, it seems that the programming block may not escape the turmoil surrounding Warner Bros Discovery, as the company plans to divide into two entities in 2026: “Warner Bros Discovery Global Networks” and “Warner Bros Discover Streaming & Studios”. Unfortunately, this split could potentially impact the future of cable networks like Cartoon Network. A representative from Boomerang has even suggested that Adult Swim’s programming schedule may be affected by these changes.
Previously, as a Programming Coordinator at Warner Bros Discovery, I had the privilege of shaping Boomerang’s schedule, a television network dedicated to airing classic Hanna Barbera and Cartoon Network shows. While Adult Swim has been showcasing non-Fox Animation series, the future might present challenges in continuing this trend, as I lamentably foresee a narrower scope with larger programming blocks due to contractual constraints. Regrettably, recent events have led to another 40% reduction in our programming team, and the split of Warner Bros Discovery means that Adult Swim/Cartoon Network will now be part of a different company.
Byer went on to say, “The creators and owners of shows like Rick And Morty, The WB Vault, Hanna Barbera, Superman, among others, sometimes find that a library of 250 rerun episodes can cost as much as producing an entire season or even less of new content. This trend has been observed before, so it’s likely we’ll see more old shows from these brands, followed by cheaper content until you find yourself watching shows like Andy Griffith and The Honeymooners on Adult Swim.
