Borderlands 4’s PC system requirements need specs over 50% of Steam doesn’t have, so I hope you’re ready to upgrade

Among the most anticipated video games in 2025 is Borderlands 4 – the next primary installment from Gearbox Software’s enduring and widely adored cooperative shooter series with loot, and their first game since 2022’s Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands spin-off. Featuring a fresh planet, narrative, massive gun collection, and new Vault Hunters, it could be one of the top games of the year. Sadly, more than half of the PC gaming community on Steam might not get to experience it.

The unveiling occurred when the cost of Borderlands 4 was disclosed on Monday, simultaneously with the publication of its PC system requirements on Steam. Notably, the general requirements are quite stringent – a GPU such as NVIDIA’s RTX 2070 or AMD’s RX 5700 XT is required at minimum, along with 16GB of RAM and 100GB of SSD storage. However, the most demanding aspect is the requirement for a CPU with eight cores or more.

In many affordable processors often employed in gaming computer constructions, you’ll find just six cores rather than eight or more. Interestingly, Steam’s latest May survey indicates that a significant number of users – approximately 50.39% – are using chips with six cores or less. This implies that more than half of players utilizing the world’s most popular PC gaming platform might struggle to run Borderlands 4 even at its minimum settings.

For those gaming on advanced systems equipped with superior processors, running Borderlands 4 shouldn’t pose any issues. However, many gamers using budget or mid-range hardware might find it likely that they’ll need to upgrade their processor in order for the game to launch correctly.

Regarding why Borderlands 4 has such high CPU demands, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly. However, considering it utilizes Unreal Engine 5 for superior visual quality and intricate rendering methods, it makes sense that it would be CPU-intensive given the frequent scenes of intense, chaotic gameplay involving numerous enemies on screen. That being said, many AAA games set for release in 2025 can run smoothly even with six-core processors as a minimum requirement and generally have less demanding specifications overall.

The positive aspect? Borderlands 4 isn’t set to launch until September 12, providing ample opportunity for you to search for a good discount on components if an upgrade is needed to match the game’s eight-core CPU requirement or anything else. In fact, Amazon Prime Day is approaching in early July, making it wise to hold off and seize the deals that will be available during this event.

Despite this, it’s unfortunate that many PC gamers may have to enhance their systems to run Borderlands 4 at its minimum requirements. Fingers crossed that this eagerly awaited cooperative shooter proves to be worth the upgrade in the long run.

The upcoming game “Borderlands 4” will be available to play on September 12, 2025 across multiple platforms including Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The standard edition of the game will retail for $69.99. For those who want more content, there’s also a Deluxe Edition priced at $99.99, while the most comprehensive package, the Super Deluxe Edition, goes for $129.99.
