Day by day, the competition in the realm of generative AI is heating up, and as a keen enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the scarcity of skilled professionals eager to join this burgeoning field. With tech giants jumping on board, the demand for talent far outweighs the supply, making it a challenging landscape to navigate.
It appears that many companies aim for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), which seems to be their ultimate objective. However, as more and more people use this term, its definition tends to vary, leading to some confusion.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has stated that Meta is attempting to lure away some of their staff members with enticing $100 million bonuses. This revelation follows Meta’s decision to intensify their focus in the area of artificial intelligence.
Facebook’s parent company just put $14.3 billion into Scale AI, a move aimed at strengthening their artificial intelligence capabilities. They’ve also recruited Scale AI’s founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang, to head their newly established department focusing on advanced artificial intelligence.
While speaking to his brother, Jack Altman, on the Uncapped podcast, Sam Altman indicated:
Meta has been extending enormous deals to numerous members of our staff, offering signing bonuses as high as $100 million and annual compensation beyond that. Yet, thus far, none of our top talent have chosen to accept these offers.
The executive further stated that he believed Meta views OpenAI as its main rival in the industry. So far, Meta has remained silent regarding these assertions, but we’re closely monitoring developments as they occur.
It’s not uncommon for powerful AI companies to attempt to lure talent away from their competitors on occasion.
In April, it was disclosed that Google’s DeepMind was implementing stringent non-compete agreements to discourage its employees from joining competing AI companies such as Microsoft and OpenAI. DeepMind’s strategy for keeping its AI workforce involves imposing unusually lengthy periods of paid leave (PTO) which may extend up to a year.
It’s also worth mentioning that Microsoft’s AI team members are earning significantly higher salaries compared to employees in other divisions. For instance, a typical AI software engineer can make as much as $377,611, which is a substantial $120,000 more than the average wage of an employee in the Azure division.
