A well-known actor from Hollywood is currently immersed in drafting a storyline for an Elseworlds project at DC Studios, but it’s not certain if this project will ever see the light of day. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly focusing on all aspects of DC, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, spoke about their plans to establish unity in their shared universe while still providing opportunities for Elseworlds narratives like the Batman Epic Crime Saga. During this conversation, Gunn emphasized that there would be ample opportunity for creatives to bring their unique perspectives on DC characters to life. Without explicitly mentioning any names, Gunn revealed that he’s been discussing a top-secret Elseworlds script with someone famous in the industry.
For our project at DC Studios to succeed, the script must be exceptional. James Gunn emphasized this as the cornerstone of their strategy. However, there are exceptions. For instance, if someone presents an idea for an ‘Elseworlds’ tale, even a well-known movie actor, I might consider it – but only if the screenplay is truly extraordinary. If not, it’s got to be exceptional at least. An ‘Elseworlds’ story might confuse some, but if it’s good enough, it’s worth telling. But we must also clearly distinguish between ‘Elseworlds’ and the main DC Universe.
Since Gunn took over as co-head at DC Studios, he’s shared his plan for Elseworlds films and TV series. However, only Reeves’ Batman projects (the movie “The Batman” and the TV show “The Penguin”) have been produced under this branding so far. At present, Reeves is working on “The Batman Part II,” which has been pushed back several times and is now set to premiere in October 2027. Gunn encourages fans to be understanding with Reeves as he works on the sequel’s script.

It’s clear that DC Studios is focusing their efforts primarily on introducing the DC Universe franchise, having started last year with the animated series “Creature Commandos”. This summer marks the official beginning as Gunn’s “Superman” hits the screens. The following year will bring the debut of “Supergirl” and “Clayface” movies, while numerous other projects are currently in different stages of production.
The idea of Elseworlds seems intriguing initially, but it might pose challenges in practice. As Gunn points out, any Elseworlds project given the go-ahead could potentially confuse audiences. Typically, comic book adaptations aim to cater to a broad spectrum, attracting both die-hard fans and casual viewers. Even with the multiverse being a significant aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having two distinct versions of the same hero leading separate film series may be too convoluted. Gunn acknowledges that Batman is causing difficulties for DC Studios at present as they strive to make The Brave and the Bold unique from The Batman. Some speculate that The Batman Part II is being delayed until DC Studios assesses how Superman performs before proceeding with further steps.
Despite the fact that this top-secret script is excellent, it’s uncertain if the Elseworlds movie will ever be produced. The outcome greatly relies on the status of the DC Universe and the progression of its related projects. Nevertheless, it would be intriguing if this project were to materialize at some point. Many actors find comic book adaptations less appealing due to the commitment of a multi-film contract. An Elseworlds project could offer a more standalone experience within the superhero realm, making it a more attractive proposition. Here’s hoping that Gunn and his team can devise a way for Elseworlds and the DCU to work together harmoniously, opening up numerous possibilities.
