New Elden Ring Nightreign update adds ‘Everdark Sovereign’ bosses — I hope you’re ready to get wrecked all over again

As a tech enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly diving into Elden Ring Nightreign since the recent patch this month significantly boosted the solo play experience. FromSoftware hinted at beefed-up battles with existing Nightlords arriving this month, and they weren’t kidding! They also confirmed that Duo Expeditions would be on the way later. Now, two weeks down the line, those enhanced fights have dropped unexpectedly in a new update, and I can confirm they’re no walk in the park.

Last Wednesday evening, I incorporated the battles, affectionately named “Everdark Sovereigns,” into our studio. The first battle, labeled as a challenging version of “Gaping Jaw” Adel, Baron of Night – Boss, was added to the list. Additionally, the Everdark Sovereign versions of “Sentient Pest” Gnoster, Wisdom of Night and “Darkdrift Knight” Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow were also implemented. Publisher Bandai Namco has announced that they will introduce tougher variations of every other Nightlord battle (excluding the final boss) in the future.

Standout fact: These unique battles follow a weekly cycle, implying that you can engage only certain Everdark Sovereign bosses if they’re accessible during your gameplay session. The challenging duel with Adel is available from the current date until June 25, 5:59 PM PT / 8:59 PM ET. If you manage to conquer it, you will receive a special currency called Sovereign Sigils, which can be traded for exceptional Relic updates and other rewards. Each kill of an Everdark Sovereign awards these sigils, with a higher bonus amount given upon the first defeat of each boss.

Players venturing into confrontations with the Everdark Sovereigns should be fully equipped to have their abilities in FromSoftware’s latest cooperative roguelike spinoff stretched to the utmost limits. In comparison to typical engagements against the Nightlords, these battles present a significantly tougher challenge, as they introduce new maneuvers and amplify their power, making them an even more formidable adversary for the Nightfarers.

As an analyst, I’ve observed that during the second phase of our initial encounter, His Grace, Adel, Knight of Night Everdark Sovereign, swiftly initiates combat. In a sense, he introduces a third phase, characterized by erratic teleportation maneuvers and the ability to conjure a massive electric storm, requiring precise timing with the Spiritsprings that materialize in the arena for us to navigate safely. The boss’ attacks inflict greater damage compared to the initial skirmish, and it seems to possess increased health as well as enhanced resistance to status effects.

To face the Everdark Sovereigns, it’s essential that you are linked to FromSoftware’s internet servers. This implies that those playing in offline single-player mode won’t encounter these Sovereigns. However, considering their temporary and rotating nature, this limitation is reasonable.

A taste of what’s to come with Nightreign?

It’s fantastic that Elden Ring: Nightreign is receiving fresh content shortly post-launch, though it appears the Everdark Sovereigns may not vary significantly from their usual versions (Adel remains largely unchanged in terms of the encounter). I can’t help but hope for tougher iterations of all seven Nightlords. Fingers crossed that the remaining four don’t keep us waiting too long!

It’s intriguing to speculate about the direction FromSoftware might take with Nightreign and future enhancements. We know a comprehensive DLC expansion for this spinoff will eventually arrive, offering fresh character classes and bosses. However, I anticipate they’ll also release incremental updates similar to the current one, enriching the content that already exists in the game. Maybe we’ll see different incarnations of the Nightlords that introduce new gameplay elements, or maybe there will be extra Shifting Earth modifications for the Limveld map itself.

Elden Ring: Nightreign is a daring new spin-off from FromSoftware that brings an innovative blend of roguelike and cooperative elements to the combat system of the original game, known as Soulsborne. Despite some notable flaws such as featuring only one map or offering limited enemy variety, it’s still shaping up to be one of the standout games this year for action enthusiasts who are fans of the Souls series. Priced at $39.99, you can find it for as low as $35.99 at CDKeys.
