In honor of the 50th anniversary of “Jaws” this month, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has rolled out a fresh 4K version of the legendary Steven Spielberg movie. This commemorative edition is available in two versions: a regular 4K package with a cover or a SteelBook edition featuring striking artwork. Moreover, there’s an extra Blu-ray disc bundled with this release, which includes the new “Jaws @ 50” documentary. I’ve had the chance to preview it, and honestly, it’s quite an impressive package overall. However, the question remains whether it’s truly essential for fans to add it to their collection.
In essence, the 4K version of “Jaws” for its 50th anniversary isn’t being criticized; it stands as an excellent product on its own. However, if you, as a fan, already possess a 4K copy of “Jaws”, there seems to be little incentive to buy this one, primarily due to the absence of unique content beyond the “Jaws @ 50” documentary.
In 2020, I own the 4K remastered edition of “Jaws” that celebrated its 45th anniversary. This edition comes in a robust box with an eye-catching lenticular cover. Inside, there’s a booklet filled with concept art, photos, and insights about the movie. The disc features the critically acclaimed restoration of Jaws and a variety of special features.
After five years, Universal introduces the 50th Anniversary Edition, with the main improvement being a documentary. The restoration remains exceptional, but no new features or special packaging are included, and it doesn’t compare favorably to the previous edition. If you’re a SteelBook collector, there might be some appeal in buying this version due to its collectible case, but that’s essentially the only reason.
Many individuals have been inquiring about the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World trilogies, which came out with 4K SteelBook editions this week. One notable improvement is the inclusion of Dolby Vision, an aspect missing from earlier collections. Combined with the new SteelBook packaging, it makes the decision to buy again more justifiable.
Universal has priced the 50th Anniversary 4K version of Jaws quite reasonably, making it an affordable option for many fans. On Amazon, the standard edition is currently under $23, only slightly more expensive than the 45th Anniversary Edition and around $6 pricier than the regular 4K version of Jaws. If you’re a dedicated collector of this film, this new release won’t put too much strain on your budget. And if the included documentary and the opportunity to sell your old copy are appealing, it might be worth the small additional cost for you.

If you’re new to the world of 4K Blu-ray discs and haven’t yet acquired “Jaws,” this could be a smart investment for both your money and time. The purpose of this article isn’t to deter anyone from purchasing “Jaws” – it’s widely recognized as one of the best movies ever made, and owning physical media is rarely a poor choice if you cherish the films in your collection.
Over time, our favorite films will continue celebrating significant anniversaries, and studios might feel inclined to roll out updated 4K and Blu-ray versions each time. Consider what could transpire when some of these legendary early Hollywood movies approach their centennial in the upcoming decade. I aspire that if this is the trend for these films, any new releases should offer value to longtime collectors by incorporating fresh features, getting creative with packaging, and including a few classic posters.
People who appreciate physical media and cherish these films will continue to invest in them, as long as there’s something compelling to motivate the purchase.
