The longstanding mystery troubling Spider-Man’s supporters for three decades will finally find resolution as a four-part comic book series hits shelves.
In the final episode of “Spider-Man: The Animated Series,” which aired between 1994 and 1998, Spider-Man’s fate was left uncertain as he ventured into various realities in search of Mary Jane Watson, who had been misplaced in another dimension.
After that episode, which marked the end of season 5, Fox cancelled the show.
In contrast, while the 1997 X-Men TV series hinted at a reunion between Peter Parker and Mary Jane, the upcoming 1994 Spider-Man comics are set to delve deeper into their subsequent events.
Following an extensive quest across various universes, it’s none other than Peter Parker, famously known as Spider-Man, who returns to the bustling city streets of New York, accompanied by his cherished partner, Mary Jane Watson.
Look at that! Among these villains, there’s a pair that stands out: Introducing for the first time in this universe, not just one, but two of Spider-Man’s most formidable adversaries from the comic books!
The new series will be written by JM DeMatteis and drawn by Jim Towe and will launch in September.
DeMatteis shared with IGN that he’s thrilled to return to the universe of the ’90s animated Spider-Man series, which holds a special place in Spidey lore as it was the first glimpse into Peter Parker’s world for many people, making him excited to revisit this beloved part of Spider-Man history.
Moving forward, we’re considering each episode or story arc as a fresh installment in the series. This involves introducing novel antagonists, obstacles, and exciting experiences for Peter, all while maintaining the unique artistic essence that John Semper and his team instilled in the initial show.
In a clear statement, John Semper Jr, who wrote Spider-Man: The Animated Series, has made it known that he hasn’t been connected to or contacted by Marvel concerning the comic book series.
In a post on what used to be Twitter, he stated that he found out about it for the first time through a text message from a friend, and clarified that neither he nor anyone at Marvel had reached out to him to be part of this comic book in any capacity.
Semper further remarked, expressing only admiration towards DeMatteis, yet clarifying that it’s up to him alone to decide where the direction of the series narrative lies.
“But, for the record, they are not my creative choices, nor do they represent any oversight by me.”
Indeed, it would’ve been considerate and perhaps even polite of Marvel to extend a contact to me at some stage, as a gesture of goodwill,” Semper added on.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’ve given up hope long ago that they would ever recognize my role in shaping the Marvel universe, such as the development of what is now famously known as the “Spider-Verse.” However, it’s still fun to watch the stories unfold on the big screen.
I hope they continue to thrive, and let’s all join in the fun as we mark the 30th anniversary of Spider-Man: The Animated Series with great enthusiasm!
