Michelle Obama is happy with the family she has.
In discussing her satisfaction with life as the mother of Sasha Obama, 23, and Malia Obama, 26, alongside their father, former President Barack Obama, she openly acknowledged that if they had a son, there would have been an excessive amount of expectation for him to emulate his father’s accomplishments.
In the June 18th episode of her podcast, IMO, Michelle expressed her joy about not having a son, which was in response to Angie Martinez asking why they didn’t consider having a third child.
“Because he would’ve been a Barack Obama,” the 61-year-old responded. “I would’ve felt for him.”
Following her brother and co-host Craig Robinson (who has son Avery Robinson, 33, and daughter Leslie Robinson, 29 with ex-wife Janis Robinson, as well as sons Austin Robinson, 15, and Aaron Robinson, 13 with wife Kelly McCrum) jokingly suggested that the “Becoming” author had simply borrowed their boys. She playfully responded, “I’ve got plenty.
As for her own parenthood journey, Michelle gushed over every stage of raising Sasha and Malia.
She expressed that she has cherished each stage of parenthood, finding joy in every moment. From their infancy, where every coo and cuddle filled her heart, to their first steps and babbling words, to the intriguing teenage years spent within the walls of the White House.
Michelle added, “I’ve cherished every moment spent with them. It’s been heartwarming to see them grow into independent individuals, make decisions for themselves, navigate through life’s complexities, and then share their insights with me.
Her frank remarks about her children were made following the news that Malia, who went by ‘Malia Ann’ in her 2024 film ‘The Heart’, decided to forego using her family surname in her career pursuits.
On the Sibling Revelry podcast, Michelle mentioned that Malia, who initially began in films, decided to drop her last name for her first project. Michelle added, ‘Even though they might still recognize it’s you, Malia,’ we understand and support her decision as she navigates her career independently.
Our daughters are 26 and 23 years old. During their teenage years, there was a phase where they needed some space to establish their independence, which they’re still navigating. They value demonstrating their hard work and achievements, rather than having others assume they’ve been given things easily without effort. They are particularly sensitive about this issue.
