32 Horror Movies That Will Make Even Seasoned Fans Squirm

Even for an experienced horror enthusiast such as myself, there comes a point where one might say ‘enough is enough’. From some of the most renowned horror films to extreme examples from around the globe, there are certain frightening movies that can unnerve even the most battle-hardened connoisseur within the genre. Let’s delve into this topic together.

Hereditary (2018)

One of Ari Aster’s films, titled “Hereditary”, serves as his directorial debut – a fact that might surprise many. Despite the movie being recognized for its numerous unsettling scenes involving cult-like behavior and demonic possession, there are certain sequences that linger in your mind long after the closing credits, such as the chilling image of Charlie’s head. I hope this reference didn’t give you nightmares!

Martyrs (2008)

2008’s Cannes Film Festival debuted a controversial film centered around two female protagonists seeking retribution against their childhood tormentors. However, their quest for justice leads them into a harrowing predicament instead. The movie is structurally built upon intense and unrelenting depictions of torture, making it compulsory viewing as the storyline revolves around this very element.

The Fly (1986)

Although The Fly may not be inherently frightening for everyone, it ranks as one of the top science fiction horror movies. It’s a film that left me feeling physically sick after witnessing the transformation at the end, which involved the character’s flesh literally dissolving from their bones – a scene that has a profound impact on viewers.

In A Violent Nature (2024)

A thrilling film titled “In a Violent Nature” offers an intense viewing experience, although some may find it less frightening, it includes graphic scenes that are downright revolting. What truly sets this movie apart is its unique perspective – it’s narrated entirely from the killer’s point of view, plunging viewers deep into his psyche to grasp his motives for violence. This aspect gives the film a chilling and unsettling quality.

The Substance (2024)

It’s no surprise that The Substance found its way into this conversation given how exceptional the film was – it even received a nomination for the 2025 Academy Award for Best Picture. The movie offers numerous thought-provoking themes, making it highly recommended for viewers. However, be warned that the climactic scene at the end might prove too intense for those with a weak stomach, as Sue transforms into a grotesque amalgamation of herself and Elisabeth, featuring an unsettling display of limbs and overall disturbing imagery.

Dread (2009)

The horror in this movie doesn’t stem from grisly scenes, but rather from the profound psychological effects of personal trauma. It follows a college student exploring the origins and boundaries of fear, pushing his experiments beyond safe limits. At certain moments, it seems as if you’re witnessing people endure unimaginable suffering. After viewing this film, you may find yourself considering therapy.

Midsommar (2019)

Ari Aster is exceptionally skilled at what he does, and among the films out there, none quite compare to “Midsommar” for me, where you truly experience an unsettling sensation. Though “Midsommar” has become somewhat familiar due to multiple viewings, it still holds a plethora of dark visuals that amplify its disturbing nature by twentyfold and instills a palpable feeling of fear that’s hard to ignore.

Tusk (2014)

Surely, Tusk has transformed into a blend of horror and comedy, given its outlandish plot, yet it’s hard to ignore the haunting scenes this film presents. For instance, the climax is particularly unsettling – witnessing a character who was once human, now almost entirely turned into a walrus due to an insane individual’s doings – that’s undeniably tough to stomach and disturbing.

The Descent (2005)

As a seasoned horror fan, as previously mentioned, I’ve only seen “The Descent” a handful of times and have no intention to revisit it. The movie revolves around a team embarking on an underground exploration that turns terrifying when they encounter creatures. What truly amplifies the horror is the oppressive, suffocating ambiance in the cave system. It’s as if you’re trapped alongside them, and the suffocating sensation is nearly unbearable – it’s like a vacuum has been applied to your breath.

The Wailing (2016)

numerous outstanding South Korean horror films are worth watching, particularly “The Wailing“, especially if you’re a fan of the genre. The plot revolves around an illness spreading through a village, causing people to transform into raging, murderous maniacs. The characters must unravel the mystery behind this affliction and find a way to halt it. However, the movie features some hauntingly memorable visuals that linger in your mind long after viewing.

Possessor (2020)

Brandon Cronenberg shares a similarity with his father David Cronenberg, who is famous for creating disturbing scenes involving the human body. This is because Brandon directed the movie “Possessor”, which revolves around an agent employing advanced technology to assume others’ identities for assassinations. However, this film contains such intense depictions of body horror that I had to avert my eyes multiple times when I initially viewed it.

Terrifier (2016) (And It’s Sequels)

Is it necessary for me to delve too deeply into this topic? After all, we’re discussing the “Terrifier” movie – known as some of the most disturbing films of the past ten years. I suggest you take my word on this; avoid watching if your stomach is sensitive.

The House That Jack Built (2018)

As a movie critic, I’d say “In The House That Jack Built, I found myself drawn into the twisted mind of a serial killer who saw his gruesome acts as an artistic endeavor. He crafted his macabre masterpiece from the bodies of his female victims, and let me tell you, it was every bit as disturbing as it sounds.

The Entire Saw Franchise (2004–)

Undeniably, I need to include the Saw films in this list. I’m the type of individual who appreciates horror movies with a twist, but the Saw series has raised the bar significantly with its intricate puzzles, intense torture scenes, and innovative use of the human body. It’s become so intense that I usually wait for it to stream so I can pause and catch my breath between the suspenseful moments.

Speak No Evil (2022)

I’m not talking about the 2024 version that is being remade. Instead, “Speak No Evil” which was released in 2022, is the original film. It tells the story of a Danish family who are invited by a Dutch family they met on vacation, but things take a dark turn almost immediately. The movie isn’t gruesome throughout, but when it gets intense, you might want to cover your eyes.

Sinister (2012)

Sinister”, a top-notch horror movie from the 2010s, is highly acclaimed for valid reasons. The plot revolves around a true-crime author who settles in a house with a haunted past that starts tormenting his family. This genre of horror can be described as gradually intense rather than jump-scare oriented. However, the increasingly unsettling visuals as the story unfolds and reaches its climax make it a challenging watch for many viewers due to its dark and disturbing content.

Infinity Pool (2023)

This film is peculiar in numerous aspects. Its primary plot revolves around a pair who find themselves in a car crash and must choose between being executed or witnessing their clones perish instead. Some scenes might leave you questioning, “What on earth did I just see?”, but given it’s by Cronenberg, this quirkiness seems fitting.

Barbarian (2022)

I thoroughly enjoyed this film when it initially came out. The movie titled “Barbarian” revolves around a female protagonist who books an Airbnb for the weekend, only to stumble upon numerous ominous mysteries lurking within. This film is certain to send shivers down your spine. You may find yourself unexpectedly laughing out loud, as I did, but then be startled by the abundance of graphic violence you’ll encounter.

The Sadness (2021)

In a unique twist on the traditional zombie narrative, the film “The Sadness” presents a pandemic that ravages Taiwan, but instead of transforming the infected into mindless monsters, they metamorphose into deeply disturbed individuals who revel in violence, murder, and all manner of heinous activities. Consequently, some extremely gruesome (and terrifying) scenes unfold.

Talk To Me (2022)

2022 saw one standout horror flick for me – “Talk to Me” – a chilling masterpiece from the always reliable A24. In this spine-tingling tale, a gaggle of teenagers discover they can converse with the deceased via a preserved hand. The film’s horror elements are elevated by its graphic moments that leave an indelible mark on viewers, making you question whether or not to press play again.

The Exorcist (1973)

Despite not being excessively graphic, the movie “The Exorcist” contains numerous unsettling scenes that I find difficult to watch due to their discomforting nature. For instance, the scene where Regan vomits and her head spins around is one particular moment that continues to disturb me even today. Frankly, it’s a memory I try to avoid dwelling on.

The Human Centipede (2009)

…do I even need to talk about this?

Sure thing!

Well then, let me explain. Essentially, The Human Centipede tells the story of a madman who abducts strangers and performs twisted experiments on them by connecting them in a grotesque chain of bodies. As you might imagine, it’s quite a sickening film. Gosh, I feel like I might vomit just thinking about it.

I hope this version helps! If you need more assistance or have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I Spit On Your Grave (1978)

The 1970s film, “I Spit on Your Grave,” was one of those horror movies that aimed to challenge boundaries, but unfortunately crossed a line. This movie, detailing a woman’s quest for revenge after being sexually assaulted, includes an extremely graphic and disturbing thirty-minute scene depicting both the assault and its violent consequences. It is advisable to approach this film with caution.

Men Behind The Sun (1988)

Men Behind the Sun is chilling for an unusual reason. Based on a true event, the film portrays the horrors that unfolded during World War II when Japan invaded China. Unlike some other films on this list, it doesn’t rely heavily on graphic violence. However, it provides a sobering reflection on the ordeals faced by prisoners of war in recent history.

X (2022)

In the film X, there are numerous gruesome scenes that speak volumes about its inclusion on this list. Beyond question, it stands out among A24’s horror movie offerings due to its gripping narrative about an adult actress battling to survive and escape a haunted house. It’s indeed quite gory!

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

It’s pretty clear from the title that this movie won’t be a pleasant watch. “Cannibal Holocaust” revolves around a documentary crew’s footage, which reveals gruesome and shocking scenes due to their encounters with cannibalistic tribes. This film is incredibly dark and not recommended for the sensitive or weak-hearted. That’s all I’ll disclose.

A Serbian Film (2010)

In my opinion, while “A Serbian Film” isn’t outright terrifying, the consequences of the protagonist’s decisions make it all the more unsettling. The story centers on an aging actor who takes a lucrative offer, leading him into a twisted film production that irreversibly changes his life. It’s a disturbing movie and I strongly advise against watching it if you can avoid it.

Hostel (2005)

For the first time recently, I finally watched the movie “Hostel”. Frankly, I have no intention of ever watching it again. The concept of visiting a hostel only to be abducted, tortured, and facing unimaginable horrors is not an experience I wish to have. I don’t need that level of anxiety in my life.

August: Underground (2001)

I’d rather skip discussing the plot of this movie as it’s quite distressing. Essentially, it portrays two ruthless murderers who document their heinous acts and methods of killing. It’s incredibly gruesome, graphic, and viewing it requires a strong constitution, as it may be nauseating to some viewers.

The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter is renowned for creating terrifying horror movies, and although The Thing may not be overly gruesome, the few gory scenes it does have are unforgettable and can leave a lasting impression for decades. Even now, I can recall vividly the scene where legs suddenly appeared from a character’s head – yikes, that still gives me the creeps!

Malignant (2021)

The movie “Malignant” is primarily a slow-building horror, but boy, the climax comes unexpectedly fast! You might expect a psychological suspense, but instead, it transforms abruptly into an intense gory spectacle, showcasing the gruesome sight of a head’s backside. Quite unpleasant, I must say.

The Strangers (2008)

The movie titled “The Strangers” is not intended to disgust you. Instead, it’s designed to create a sense of unease or discomfort within you. It skillfully cultivates an atmosphere of dread in your mind, prolonging the suspense just as the victims do, and leaving you on edge to the point where you might feel compelled to switch off the television. Just thinking about it gives me chills.

Here are a few horror movies I’d recommend, as they truly excel in creating an unsettling atmosphere – or generating plenty of gore. Keep in mind that not everything on the internet is family-friendly, so proceed with caution when choosing your viewing material.
