On Friday morning, as a dedicated fan, I was thrilled to get an exclusive sneak peek at Square Enix’s upcoming Patch 7.3 for Final Fantasy XIV’s expansion, Dawntrail. The almost four-hour long Letter From the Producer revealed plenty, but one particular announcement has everyone in the community buzzing with excitement.
The announcement for FFXIV Patch 7.3: The Promise of Tomorrow is exciting because it addresses a long-standing desire among players since Shadowbringers was released in 2019 – Hrothgar and Viera characters will now have more options to wear headgear beyond just a few hats and helmets. Currently, these races can equip headgear, but most items in the game don’t visibly appear on them due to Hrothgar’s distinctive lion-like features and Viera’s rabbit ears.
As of August, we’ll experience a shift with the introduction of “extended headgear compatibility” for characters like Hrothgar and Viera – a feature long-awaited since its initial inclusion in Shadowbringers six years ago. Interestingly, Viera will now have the ability to conceal their distinctive ears or allow them to pierce through hats and helmets, a detail that modders discovered looks fitting years back. Given the anticipation within our community for this feature, which has been requested across three expansions, it’s safe to say the excitement is palpable.
VIERA AND HROTHGAR ARE FINALLY GETTING HATS!!!!!! from r/ffxiv
Without a doubt, excitement about the news has swiftly climbed to the peak of the r/ffxiv subreddit, as numerous fans erupt with joy over the surprising revelation: indeed, it’s long awaited! One jubilant Warrior of Light exclaims, “OH MY GOODNESS! Our moment has arrived! YAYYYYYYY,” while another cheers, “RAAAAAA! At last! I was just moments away from fainting,” referencing the Fantasia items that cost $10 or can sometimes be obtained for free in-game.
While some individuals are holding back their enthusiasm for now, there are quite a few voices expressing reservations due to the unclear language used in descriptions such as “extended headwear options” and “diverse headwear will show up on Hydaelyn’s Hrothgar and Viera characters.
A commentator shares their perspective: “The headgear has been broadened, yet it doesn’t guarantee every hat in the game. While it’s a positive development, the specific number of hats remains unclear, so let’s maintain a reasonable outlook.”
On the other hand, another user lightheartedly remarked: “We’re preparing 3 hats for viera and hrothgar, so keep your excitement in check!
While it’s important to keep in mind that adjusting anticipations is wise, it’s essential to note that the creators hinted at making headgear suitable for Hrothgar and Viera as an ongoing task, including helmets eventually. So while numerous hats and helmets might not be wearable by these races upon Patch 7.3’s debut, there’s a high probability that they will become accessible at a later stage.
After a six-year break on this issue, I must admit I’m astonished that Square Enix is even considering headgear options for Hrothgar and Viera. To be frank, it seems rather unbelievable that it’s only happening now in the MMO, but as a fan, I can’t help but feel relieved that it’s finally happening – “better late than never” indeed.
Regarding the remainder of Patch 7.3, players can anticipate continuing with the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ), as well as questlines associated with Yok Huy allied societies, multiple new dungeons, the FFXI crossover alliance raid San d’Oria: The Second Walk, and a fresh Cosmic Exploration planet named Phaenna.
Final Fantasy XIV stands among the top MMOs currently playable, boasting a reputation as one of the finest PC games and console games overall. Remarkably, you can access the core A Realm Reborn gameplay and the initial expansions Heavensward and Stormblood free of charge (albeit with some restricted features). The title is compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, PS5, and PS4 platforms.
