It’s no secret: The Pretty Little Liars cast is down for a reunion.
Each of Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, and Sasha Pieterse shares their unique perspective on how a comeback of the cherished Freeform drama might unfold.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on June 20th, Troian expressed that the story seems more suited to a film rather than another season. However, she added that it would be intriguing to explore where these characters end up.
The 39-year-old, who was part of the legendary quintet, expressed, “We’ve held them dear to our hearts. They were with us for seven years, and then absent for another seven. Now seems like the ideal moment to catch up and find out where they are now.
Similarly to Sasha, who is 29 years old, is always eager to reunite The Liars. She expressed, “I have fond feelings for everyone we collaborated with in the past.” It’s intriguing to ponder what it might entail for our characters if we were to work together again.
And that’s why Shay, 38, admittedly “can’t do it without my girls.”
She expressed, “I believe it might be adorable if we all decide to go ahead with it.” She conveyed this to THR. “I’m open to the idea and they are aware of that. It would need to be something we all participate in together.
Ashley’s proposition was a bit out of the ordinary. Jokingly, she suggested that Hanna might be the elusive character who caused trouble for the girls throughout seven seasons from 2010 to 2017, referred to as “A.” She added that if Hanna could embody this role, Ashley would be willing to participate.
As for Lucy? She told TopMob News last year that she’d do a reunion “in a heartbeat.”
Reflecting on it from a distance now, I find myself admiring it even more, he said playfully, suggesting that a reunion, styled like “The Real Housewives of Rosewood,” would be quite entertaining.
Even creator Marlene King herself is open to the idea, hinting to THR during a cast interview that she enjoys the thought of potentially making a movie or a series of ten episodes set once again in Rosewood.
She pointed out, “I need to think of an engaging plan to get everyone involved again, and decide on a new setting for these events.” It’s been long enough, she added, that we can create additional, unique adventures for the characters, keeping the essence of their stories while introducing something fresh.
Oh my gosh, I’ve been utterly heartbroken ever since Marlene revealed that the rumored PLL film, which she initially hinted as a bridge connecting season six’s Part A and B, never came to fruition! Can you believe it’s been years now? It still feels like yesterday when I heard the news.
She clarified that it hadn’t been published due to professional commitments, but admitted it would have been enjoyable.
Based on their statements, it appears that both Tyler Blackburn and Ian Harding express a stronger preference towards watching movies rather than limited series.
Tyler, 38, pointed out that if the original series had been rated at least PG-13, it could have been made more intense, graphic, or sensual. He suggested that it would have been much cooler and edgier if it wasn’t bound by a family-friendly network.
Ian, aged 38, expressed his desire to know more about the characters, yet he emphasized that it would depend on the script, story, and those involved. In other words, he would welcome such an opportunity and, if unrealized as a movie, he could accept where it ended.
For now, keep reading to uncover more behind-the-scenes secrets about Pretty Little Liars.
Sara Shepard worked as a ghostwriter at the prominent publishing house Alloy, known for creating ‘Gossip Girl’, when she conceived the idea for the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ book series. This series revolves around four friends struggling to cope after their group leader mysteriously vanishes. Interestingly, Shepard drew inspiration from two real-life incidents of women being kidnapped. As she shared with Cosmopolitan, her fear of kidnapping led her to ponder about what might happen if someone were to take you, and what would follow such an event.
2. In an unexpected decision, the showrunner Marlene King opted to compress the storyline from the initial book into merely the pilot episode. Yet, this choice established the fast-paced rhythm that characterized the series in subsequent episodes.
King stated to Cosmo, “Sara Shepard writes those captivating, shocking chapter endings, and I wanted each episode to mirror that. I aimed to maintain the same suspenseful vibe from the books as they transitioned to TV. I believed the book’s fans would continue following the story on screen.
3a. As a devoted fan, I recall that Lucy Hale starred in the initial production of “Liar,” a role she secured without auditioning due to her connection with the studio from her brief stint on the CW series “Privileged.” King noted that she had a substantial fanbase. Interestingly, Hale was initially captivated not just by Aria but also by Hanna, a character that I hadn’t seen her play before, as she shared in an interview with Cosmo.
King further explained, “We began testing Hale with various actors to check their chemistry, and it was during those tests that she discovered her strong desire to portray the character of Aria.
4. Initially, Shay Mitchell wasn’t the first choice for the role of Emily in “Pretty Little Liars,” as another actress seemed more fitting. However, King confessed to Cosmo that it was a tough call finding the right Emily. We saw two potential actors on tape, and I leaned towards choosing the other candidate. Yet, during the audition, Shay Mitchell simply took ownership of Emily’s character. In the room, her performance shifted our opinions and earned her the role.
5. Troian Bellisario initially felt she wasn’t suitable for the character Spencer, as there were some differences from the original script: “The scene I read during auditions depicted Spencer sneaking out of a family dinner to smoke a cigarette with her sister’s fiancé. This scene was ultimately excluded from the pilot episode because it was deemed too provocative!
6. One of King’s greatest battles with the studio centered around the scene where Wren smokes a cigarette. As she explained to Cosmo, this was the main point of contention. The issue stemmed from a Disney policy against smoking. However, they allowed us to depict him extinguishing the cigarette in a pot plant, which was the most daring move we made.
7. Janel Parrish admitted she initially tried out for Spencer’s role. “I received several callbacks but didn’t get the part,” she shared with Just Jared Jr. “I was really disappointed because I adored the script. However, about a month later, they invited me to audition for Mona, and that was it. I’m genuinely thrilled about that role. I grew fond of portraying Mona.
8. Initially, Sasha Pieterse, later known for portraying Alison DiLaurentis, came very near to securing the role of Hanna. However, it was found out that she was just 12 years old at the time, which prevented her from getting the part.
In an interview with Variety, King stated, “I foresaw that Hanna would perform certain actions, and I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Shouldn’t we be cautious about involving a 12-year-old in such activities?’ However, due to labor laws, those under 16 can only work for a limited number of hours. Consequently, we decided to cast her as Alison instead.” She was younger than the rest, but her performance left everyone in awe, giving them quite a fright in a positive manner.
9. Ashley Benson joined the main cast last, as King shared with Variety, “I recall her attending her audition while in tears because she had just learned that her show ‘Eastwick’ was cancelled, which is why she came for this audition.
King elaborated, “We were looking for a blonde actress to fill this role since it was one of the final casting decisions, and aside from Alison, no other blonde was part of our show. We struggled to find the right fit, but when she walked in…there’s an undeniable charm about her, how the camera catches her, and those captivating eyes. In that moment, everyone in the room knew we had found our Hanna.
10. The PLL’s opening theme tune, “Secret” by The Pierces, was proposed by Benson following her discovery of it during the pilot filming. According to Bellisario, she mentioned this to Benson saying, “You said, ‘I’d like you to present it to Marlene, as I believe it could make an excellent theme song.’
11. In an interview with Cosmo, Hale shared that Aria’s well-known “shush” pose in the initial promotions was a spontaneous thought that surprisingly ended up being part of the final edit. Previously, Aria had expressed her concern about the alignment of her finger in the “shushing” gesture during the intro, tweeting, “I’ve noticed my finger isn’t centered when I shush the camera in the opening scene. It bothers me too.
12. During the initial season, the striking photoshoot of all four principal actors covered in dirt within a cemetery left such an impression on viewers that they often mistook the show’s title for something like “Muddy Small Deceits,” as per King’s account.
13. Although Keegan Allen gained popularity as Toby, James Neate was the one who initially played the role in the pilot episode. Notably, this wasn’t the only cast change that occurred during the show’s run. In season two, Drew Van Acker replaced Parker Bagley as Jason DiLaurentis.
14a. As a lifestyle expert, I’ve found myself reflecting on the intriguing journey of Toby, a beloved character from a popular series. Originally, the author intended for him to meet his end in the first season via suicide, mirroring his book counterpart’s fate. However, upon witnessing the heartfelt reactions of fans towards Allen and recognizing the resonance between the Spencer-Toby dynamic, she decided to spare Toby’s life, instead opting for a different story arc.
15a. As Alison’s ruffled yellow tank was a frequent costume piece due to its numerous flashback scenes, I, the actress playing her, confessed on The Talk in 2016 that my dislike for that shirt runs deep from the start. In fact, there are 13 identical shirts, and if I could, I would burn every single one of them.
16. Kylie Jenner, known for frequently expressing her interest in the show, was initially invited to make a guest appearance in 2015. However, this opportunity didn’t materialize due to a disagreement between Kylie and her mother manager, Kris Jenner, as depicted on an episode of ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’.
17. Ever since it first aired in 2010, PLL has been one of the television shows that generated the most conversation on social media platforms. In fact, its final episode was the most-discussed TV episode on Twitter in 2017.
18. Renowned for its unexpected turns and surprising revelations that were sometimes hard to follow, the team learned to stop questioning things. As production designer Jakub Durkoth explained to Cosmo, “I hung a box on the wall in the art department. If you asked a question that seemed illogical, you had to put a dollar in it.
19. Eager to regain the affection of Bellisario after our early split, I seized a minor part on Pretty Little Liars as a determined effort to charm her back. (First person perspective)
He shared with PopSugar that the role was not something he would usually pursue at that stage of his career, given it was just a one-day job on “Pretty Little Liars”. However, he felt determined to win it because he missed the actress and was willing to put all his efforts into getting it. He mobilized everyone in his industry, making calls left and right saying, “We’re going to get this part, we’re going to get this part.” This role received more preparation than anything else in his life.
The effort he put in was rewarded when the actor from Suits secured a part for the second season, and later in 2016, the pair managed to resolve their differences and tied the knot.
20. Over the course of the series, multiple characters were portrayed as “A,” but in the final episode, it was unveiled that “A.D.” (also known as “Uber A”) was actually Spencer’s long-hidden twin sister Alex Drake, played by Bellisario. In an interview with Elle, the actress admitted she had been keeping this secret since she found out about the plot twist in season five.
For quite some time, the question used to be asked, “Who is A.D.?” To which I would respond, “It’s me!” And everyone would just chuckle. Having a secret known only by a select few – myself, Marlene, and a few others at that stage – is quite fascinating. It allows you to blend in inconspicuously among the crowd.
21. PLL introduced two brief spin-offs, namely Ravenswood and The Perfectionists, before undergoing a 2022 reboot. The creator of Riverdale, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, was the brain behind Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, a series that takes place in the same universe and revolves around a new set of victims being tormented by a different incarnation of “A.
22. The reboot was called off in 2024, yet the special connection among the original stars remains unchanged. In 2016, the main six actresses got identical index finger tattoos as a tribute to the final episode of “Pretty Little Liars.”
I wanted to share this moment with everyone, it was truly unforgettable! A big thank you goes out to @shamrocksocialclub for an amazing experience. The show was so inspiring that we just had to get tattoos to remember it by. And of course, on our ‘shh’ fingers to keep the secret alive!
