As a diehard comic book enthusiast, let me tell you, Krypto the Superdog stands tall among the best superpets in DC Comics, perhaps even in all of comics. This unwaveringly loyal canine is always by his Super-owner’s side and the Superman Family, no matter who or what they are up against. But before he became a beacon of courage, Krypto was just a regular dog on the doomed planet Krypton, the cherished pet of Lara and Jor-El, and baby Kal-El’s companion.
In the spirit of DC’s Summer of Superman event, they’re offering us a miniseries that reveals Krypto’s Earth arrival. It’s a blend of wholesomeness and heartbreak, but what truly resonates is the unexpected turn: Krypto didn’t find by Superman upon his Earth landing, but rather by his most formidable foe—Lex Luthor. And let me tell you, that twist sets the stage for some tumultuous events.
Krypto the Normal Dog, Mostly
Title #1 of “Krypto: The Last Canine of Krypton” reveals that before he could chew through metal or spin his tail faster than a zipping bullet, Krypto was simply the family pet of the Els. They trained him on commands and took him for walks, where he would wait patiently for his food to be served and enjoy sniffing around other dogs’ behinds. The narrative unfolds from his perspective, as we see him yawn upon waking up to the breakfast call, to his nighttime snuggling with the baby who would later become Superman. Krypto is a messy, energetic dog who adores his family above all else, and this story will demonstrate that no matter where you find yourself in the cosmos, dogs remain dogs at heart. Mike Norton’s art is stunning throughout, as he meticulously illustrates a dog blissfully unaware of the chaos around him but content just to be present.
Absolutely, Ryan North’s script is equally deserving of accolades. Before delving into the plot, let me express my admiration for how skillfully the comic book portrays Krypto’s perception of the world. Unlike other characters who use thought bubbles, Krypto doesn’t. Instead, words spoken by others are grayed out, except for words that Krypto understands, which are bolded and written in black text. This makes it easy for readers to follow the story from our perspective, but also shows us how Krypto perceives it. The narrative itself is heart-wrenching. The Els are working on a spaceship to transport Kal-El to safety as Krypton explodes in the background, but of course, they wouldn’t send their only child into space without testing. At some point in their research, they needed a living test subject to measure the results, and with limited resources, they chose Krypto as their lab dog.

A Bumpy Arrival to a New Home
In a turn of events, Krypto’s spacecraft soars into the cosmos, initially sailing smoothly. However, an unexpected wormhole forms, dragging his vessel inside. Unconscious of the chaos, Krypto dozes off. He later awakens as his ship crashes into a river on Earth, many years ahead. Ever the optimistic being, Krypto swims to land, shakes himself dry, licks himself clean, and begins walking. He eventually navigates towards Metropolis, only to discover himself as a foreigner in an alien world. Hungry, Krypto rummages through trash when a homeless man kicks him away. He scratches his neck on a fence and dashes into the street, causing a car to swerve to avoid hitting him. Disoriented and lost, Krypto darts through the city until a comforting hand stops him. A young Lex Luthor reassures Krypto, promising to keep him safe from harm.
Krypto, the super dog, is spending time with Lex, who hasn’t yet become Superman’s nemesis. However, even as a young man, Lex was known for playing with Kryptonite, so it’s risky to leave Krypto in his care. As of now, Krypto isn’t powerful enough due to lack of sun exposure, but if he shows powers around Lex Luthor, things could quickly escalate. Lex is always on the lookout for an advantage, and he won’t let a potential asset slip away.
Indeed, it might not be as grim as it initially seems. The ongoing Superman series has demonstrated that Lex initially took up the mantle of superhero in Metropolis, genuinely showing concern for the timid puppy. There’s a chance that Lex could bring Krypto back to Smallville, where the Steel-built Dog would eventually discover his true home with Clark and the Kent family. Regardless of the outcome, I sincerely hope that Lex doesn’t harm our lovable dog in any way, as he does not deserve to suffer at the hands of a mad scientist under any circumstance. Krypto is a virtuous canine, deserving of kindness and respect.
