The manga Black Lagoon has been in print since its inception in 2002, but throughout its run, the story of the mercenary group has encountered obstacles. Creator Rei Hiroe has openly discussed his battles with depression in the past, yet there is exciting news for fans: Black Lagoon’s manga is set to resume publication after a hiatus, with a new chapter expected to release sooner than anticipated.
In the upcoming July 18th issue of Sunday GX, Black Lagoon is set to resume its manga series. Fans have been eagerly anticipating the next chapter, Chapter 119, since it was released towards the end of last year, so it’s exciting news that a new promotion for the next installment has been shared on Sunday GX’s official website. According to the description, the storyline will focus on Gris and his gang launching a preemptive attack on Hotel Moscow, with Locke initiating a plan to prevent the city from turning into a battleground!

This year, the creator of ‘Black Lagoon’, Rei Hiroe, opened up about his prolonged battle with depression. He shared how at times he felt utterly immobilized, as if trapped in a state of stasis. There’s been a quote circulating on social media suggesting that depression steals a decade from your life, but for him, it was a struggle to recover. He persevered, albeit irregularly, and it took him four years to release one volume. Even with tight deadlines, he still finds himself gripped by panic, writing only when he has a substantial cushion of time. As a serial manga artist, he admits that he hasn’t fully recuperated from this half-dead state, so he encourages caution.
Hiroe found himself increasingly struggling with his mental health while working on his manga, as he explained, “The job was becoming progressively tougher and my thoughts were getting jumbled. Even when I wanted to start a new task, my hands seemed to refuse. Before I knew it, I would say to myself, ‘I don’t feel like drawing,’ without even intending to. This led me to think, ‘This isn’t working out, I can’t draw,’ and I discussed the situation with Natsume. It was around 2010 when we decided to take a break.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the thrilling adventures of “Black Lagoon” back in 2006, brilliantly animated by Studio Madhouse. Yet, there are countless manga tales that remain untouched on our small screens. With almost two decades passing since its initial run, and the spin-off series being the only exception in 2010, I’m confident that many anime enthusiasts like myself eagerly anticipate a revival of this captivating show.
