Among the many well-known duos in the Star Wars universe, none can compare to the dynamic pairing of R2-D2 and C-3PO. While one is a small, rebellious astromech droid who communicates through sounds, the other is a haughty, golden protocol droid fluent in more than six million forms of communication. Their unique partnership makes them the foremost comedy act within the Star Wars galaxy.
Are Artoo and Threepio always bickering or occasionally offering each other praise? They embody the ideal relationship goals, no matter what the Star Wars saga portrays. Across the nine films, these two droids provide numerous amusing incidents. Here are ten scenes that demonstrate beyond a doubt why R2-D2 and C-3PO are the most outstanding pair in Star Wars.
1) R2-D2 Saves C-3PO From Salacious Crumb (Return of the Jedi)
It’s not something we’d wish on anyone, but having our eyes plucked out by a Kowakian monkey-lizard is definitely not on our bucket list. So, it’s safe to guess that when C-3PO was being tormented and his sensors damaged by Salacious B. Crumb on Jabba the Hutt’s ship, he must have felt something akin to a droid’s worst nightmare.
Fortunately, R2-D2 was present to give Crumb a shock of 20,000 volts, making him jump into the rafters and abandon poor Artoo. Despite their occasional disagreements, Artoo and Threepio can always rely on each other in tough situations.
2) Artoo Calls Out His Friend For Being A Nudist (The Phantom Menace)
When George Lucas disclosed that he was developing a set of prequels taking place before the initial Star Wars trilogy, fans eagerly anticipated witnessing the initial encounter between C-3PO and R2-D2. In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, this long-awaited scene unfolded as Threepio was introduced to a seemingly disinterested R2-D2. As Threepio delivered his customary, “C-3PO, Human, Cyborg relations,” speech, Artoo seized the moment to highlight the fact that his fellow droid lacked external casing.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself chuckling at a rather amusing interaction between C-3PO and R2-D2. In this scene, C-3PO seemed flustered after R2-D2 used an unfamiliar term, “naked.” His subsequent reaction was priceless: “Wait a minute, what do you mean by ‘naked’? Oh my! It appears I’m exposing myself! Oh dear!”
3) The Droids Bicker Over Flooding Princess Leia’s Room (The Empire Strikes Back)
One drawback when you have supportive characters like R2-D2 and C-3PO, who are not always in focus, is that some of their most entertaining interactions can go unnoticed. For example, there’s a conversation between Artoo and Threepio where the taller droid scolds his round companion for raising the temperature in Princess Leia’s private rooms.
The Empire Strikes Back.
4) R2-D2 Wakes Up After a 30-Year Nap (The Force Awakens)
In the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” it opens with R2-D2 in a state of self-induced hibernation. As a solitary C-3PO informs a new droid, BB-8, Artoo entered this state due to the vanishing act of Luke Skywalker and has been silent and motionless for years. However brief, it’s the first time in decades that R2-D2 is active again, causing C-3PO immense joy upon reconnecting with his old friend…but only for a few moments.
In a manner reminiscent of R2-D2, the recently activated robot responded with an insult aimed at C-3PO, pushing their friendship down a few notches on C-3PO’s list of grievances. Since we don’t understand droid language, it’s unknown exactly what Artoo said to his patient companion. However, it was severe enough that C-3PO retaliated by slapping him on the head in response. Isn’t it fascinating how reunions can sometimes lead to such exchanges?
5) Threepio Offers Up The Droid Equivalent of a Kidney Transplant (A New Hope)
In a way that might seem like he deeply dislikes R2-D2 at times, C-3PO frequently speaks disparagingly. However, when crisis hits, his genuine feelings are revealed. For instance, during the aftermath of the first Death Star’s destruction, Artoo, charred and smoking, returned to the Rebels’ base on Yavin IV following a direct hit in the attack.
Threepio advises his master, “Sir, it’s essential that you fix him,” and then offers to sacrifice any of his “components or parts” if it becomes necessary.
6) Doctor Artoo Performs Battlefield Surgery on C-3PO (Attack of the Clones)
R2-D2 shows his affection for C-3PO in an unusual way. Instead of verbally expressing his feelings, R2 demonstrates them through actions. At the Battle of Geonosis, R2’s actions were particularly heartfelt. Despite the intense gunfire, he selflessly worked to reattach Threepio’s head to his body, showing an incredible amount of bravery and devotion. In a dangerous situation, R2 could have easily escaped, but instead, he chose to put himself at risk in order to save his dearest friend, acting like a true hero.
7) Lover’s Spat on Tattooine (A New Hope)
For decades, there’s been much speculation among fans about the true nature of R2-D2 and C-3PO’s relationship. Some see them as merely close friends, while others think there might be something more between them. Regardless of where you stand, it’s clear that when these two bicker, they sound like the most long-lasting couple in the galaxy. Right from their arrival on Tatooine in Star Wars: A New Hope, they were at odds, squabbling over directions and hurling insults such as “clunky old bucket.
In a manner common among some couples, they conclude their dispute by parting ways separately, both feeling certain of their own rightness and viewing the other as mistaken.
8) R2-D2 Restores C-3PO’s Memory (The Rise of Skywalker)
In the storyline of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there was an important event where C-3PO got manipulated to decode ancient Sith texts. However, this alteration resulted in him losing some of his memories. For a significant portion of the film, it seems as though the robot has permanently erased all his past experiences and memories, including those shared with R2-D2.
It’s fortunate that steadfast companion R2-D2 always has a backup of his anxious comrade’s data storage, causing audiences to ponder, how frequently does C-3PO undergo a total memory erasure?
9) C-3PO Makes a Sale (A New Hope)
Earlier, we noted that Threepio spoke rather unkindly to his small companion in their initial moments on Tatooine. However, the chatty droid makes amends for this by persuading Luke Skywalker to buy R2-D2 from a band of Jawas.
Initially, Luke and his Uncle Owen considered C-3PO and another astromech droid, R5-D4, for their new farmworkers. However, when R5 malfunctioned, Threepio saw an opportunity to persuade them that he would be a more reliable assistant.
10) Threepio Lectures Artoo About the Dangers of Tobacco Use (Anti-Smoking PSA)
Back in the 1980s, it was a major focus to warn kids about the risks of smoking, even iconic characters like C-3PO and R2-D2 from Star Wars joined the cause. In a public service announcement, they appeared together to educate children on the harmful effects of cigarettes. During popular children’s shows, this commercial aired, depicting Threepio scolding Artoo for holding a lit cigarette, and delivering a powerful message about the dangers of smoking.
Because droids like Artoo lack the biological components of humans such as hearts and lungs, Threepio explains the harmful effects of cigarettes on humans. Demonstrating the care they have for their companion, R2-D2 and Threepio often show tough love when necessary.
