This week, Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has terminated another series prematurely, contributing to a significant trend of cancellations throughout the month. However, this most recent cancellation involves a popular sports series that was abruptly halted before it could truly thrive among fans.
Shonen Jump is currently undergoing a significant transformation during the summer, as they are launching numerous new series this month in an effort to find their next blockbuster hit. Regrettably, this surge of new content means that many ongoing series will be coming to a close.
This Summer has proven challenging for Shonen Jump, with several of its series being terminated over the past few weeks. Most recently, “Embers” by Kei Kurumazaki and Sotaro Nishii was cut short, reaching only 20 chapters before it was cancelled.
Embers Cancelled at Shonen Jump After 20 Chapters
Initially appearing in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine back in February, “Embers” is currently the shortest series to be cancelled this month. The anime series “Super Psychic Policeman Chojo” and “Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery” both managed to develop their stories over the course of a year with more than 50 and nearly 30 chapters respectively, before they concluded. However, “Embers” has been cancelled prematurely, denying fans the opportunity to fully appreciate its potential. This unfortunate turn of events is reflective of the intense competition faced by series when trying to maintain a serialization in the magazine.

Embers offered a fresh perspective on football, as Shonen Jump hasn’t produced many series similar to it. However, fans quickly noticed its striking resemblance to popular series like Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura’s Blue Lock. Despite this, it stood out with a unique premise: a group of delinquents combining their skills to challenge well-structured teams solely driven by their fervor for victory. Regrettably, we’ll never get to witness its potential greatness.
What Does This Mean for Shonen Jump?
This summer, Shonen Jump is undergoing significant transformations, with three fresh series debuting in June as they seek to establish new cornerstones capable of sustaining the magazine long-term. However, the cancellation of “Embers” offers an intriguing perspective on the magazine, signifying another unsuccessful endeavor to revive a popular sports serialization. Aside from Blue Box and Harukaze Mound, there seems to be a lack of manga in the magazine catering to sports enthusiasts, which is typically found in other action-oriented magazines’ offerings.
This type of venue is where enthusiasts have enjoyed past successes such as Haikyuu!!, Eyeshield 21, among others, and Shonen Jump seems poised for another sports blockbuster. However, Embers didn’t meet the editors’ expectations, so the duo responsible may return in the future with a new project. It’s not uncommon for creators whose work has been discontinued in Shonen Jump to come back with fresh series ideas, and this is likely what will happen here as the team behind Embers needs to brainstorm and decide on their next potential project.
