Phyllis Logan, who plays the main character Cora Felton in the 5’s comedy-drama “Murder Most Puzzling,” found the role challenging yet intriguing because it was “unusually whimsical and distinct.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: In a small, peaceful town named Bakerbury, I find myself drawn into an intriguing tale where the revered actress from Downton Abbey, known as Mrs. Hughes, takes on a new role. This time, she’s not a part of the aristocracy but a puzzle expert, teaming up with local law enforcement to unravel a series of mysterious murders that have shaken the tranquility of this sleepy town.
The three-part series is a reinterpretation of the Puzzle Lady Mystery novels penned by the late American author, Parnell Hall. This series features a 69-year-old protagonist who exhibits quirks and sometimes unconventional views on politics.
Initially, Logan felt a bit nervous about taking on the leading role; however, her enthusiasm for the character overpowered those feelings.
She shared: “After reviewing the script myself, I had my spouse take a look at it as well – I always appreciate his perspective. He praised the script’s quality and the captivating role of Cora, which resonated with me too. Subsequently, I arranged a meeting with director Tom (Dalton), who traveled to Scotland to discuss the project with me.

Logan mentioned: “Taking on the main role is quite intimidating, but I figured why not? To be truthful, typical police dramas don’t really grab my attention. However, working with Ashley Jensen in Shetland was enjoyable because it had a surprising twist at the end, and I got to portray an intriguing, villainous character, which was fantastic.
Besides that, I starred in a series titled ‘Guilt’, which stood out due to its unique blend of dark humor. On the other hand, ‘The Puzzle Lady’ caught my attention because it’s simply bizarre and unlike anything else, and I hope it proves entertaining for viewers. My wish is that people find it enjoyable for its amusing aspects. This show certainly isn’t depressing or gloomy.
In the debut of Murder Most Puzzling on 5 last Thursday, viewers were introduced to Logan, portrayed by Cora Felton. She is set to reappear in the upcoming second episode, where she encounters a prison inmate who maintains that he was unfairly convicted for murdering his former girlfriend.
