People who aren’t familiar with video games might have been taken aback by the second season of The Last of Us, as it strongly hinted that the already confirmed third season will focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby. Initially seen as a potential antagonist on TV, Dever herself has expressed in an interview why she doesn’t mind portraying a character that viewers and gamers might initially dislike due to the narrative setup.
Since seasons 1 and 2 of “The Last of Us” can be streamed with a Max subscription, the actress recently sat down with Walton Goggins for an interview with Vanity Fair. Having previously worked together on “Justified,” they discussed the challenges of portraying complex characters that viewers might not always sympathize with. Dever reflected on this connection to her role as Abby, particularly the intense scene in season 2 where she kills Pedro Pascal’s Joel, commenting:
When you initially encounter Abby, she may seem like an antagonist to some. This impression was certainly strong when I stepped onto the set and accepted this role. To say my entry into this narrative is less than ideal would be an understatement. I’m aware that I might not be popular, and I must compartmentalize that feeling and focus on embodying the character authentically, delving deep into her essence.
I admire an actress who, despite feeling jittery about public speaking, effortlessly delivers when it’s her character who needs to speak in a scene. She may harbor apprehensions about performing high-altitude stunts or being pursued, but when it comes to embodying Abby emotionally on screen, she courageously pushes aside concerns about how the audience might react later on.

Without a doubt, Kaitlyn Dever has portrayed numerous remarkable characters across her films and television series, yet Abby stands out as exceptional. In the upcoming season, her character’s narrative is expected to stir deep emotions in viewers, even those known for their anger.
The extraordinary actress discussed the intense efforts she’s made to comprehend her character’s troubled mind, and explained why this process has proven so fulfilling for her acting career:
In my acting career, I’ve never delved as deeply into a character or played someone as enraged as this role. This journey took me to emotional depths I hadn’t ventured before, but it was an extraordinary experience. It taught me so much about myself and feels like a form of therapy that one can’t pay for. It continually amazes me how much personal growth happens on these projects.
Reflecting on this, if Kaitlyn Dever had been cast as Ellie in The Last of Us movie years ago, she might have experienced a distinctly different kind of maturity compared to what she’s encountered as Abby. As someone unfamiliar with the games, I’m eager to see where Abby’s character goes from here, particularly given that Kaitlyn mentioned viewers perceive her as the antagonist.

For me as a teenager, the character Ellie from “The Last of Us” was truly transformative. I’m really enjoying how the series is developing her storyline, particularly with her companion Dina.
As Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, co-creators of “The Last of Us”, get ready for Season 3 off-camera, viewers are pondering over the series finale’s dramatic death scene and its enigmatic cliffhanger. Although I wasn’t completely satisfied with how that particular moment unfolded, I remain eager to find out when and under what circumstances Bella Ramsey’s character will reappear in the next season, as well as whether Abby’s final gunshot managed to hit its mark.
It seems likely that Pedro Pascal’s character Joel may not appear frequently in Season 2 due to his departure, but there could be instances of flashbacks or dream sequences where he reappears momentarily. If Joel is absent, we can look forward to seeing more of Dever, who previously had limited impactful scenes, along with other members from Abby’s group who met a tragic end at the hands of Ellie.
Excitedly speaking here, I can’t hide my joy as I share that “The Last of Us” is coming back on HBO for Season 3! But brace yourselves, fellow fans, we might have to wait a year, or even more, before we get our hands on fresh episodes. Fingers crossed that the cast starts sharing some juicy behind-the-scenes tidbits as they gear up for production. Can’t wait to see what’s in store!
