Brad Pitt isn’t afraid to be vulnerable about his health.
As a devoted follower, I’d like to share a rephrased version: I myself can attest that the community of Alcoholics Anonymous has been truly remarkable during my journey towards sobriety, particularly after my ex-partner Angelina Jolie filed for divorce in 2016.
Brad shared that his first experience with sobriety was particularly remarkable. He spoke about this during the June 23rd episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. It was a powerful moment as men openly discussed their experiences, mistakes, desires, pains, and even humor associated with it.
63-year-old (who is a father of six children including Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox with Angelina) confessed that he initially found it difficult to share his story during group sessions but eventually grew to enjoy the experience.
He reminisced, “I found myself almost begging for solutions, grasping at anything that came my way. It was a challenging phase of my life. I felt I had to rejuvenate, needed to shake off lethargy in certain aspects. And it held great significance for me… Everyone seemed so willing and understanding.
It was beneficial when others in attendance openly discussed their successes and challenges during the session. Despite the apprehension that came with his fame, as there was a risk of confidential information being disclosed, Brad was not afraid to confront his issues head-on.
“I am a stubborn f–k,” the Oscar winner—who is now dating Ines de Ramon—emphasized. “When I’ve stepped in s–t, I’m pretty good at taking responsibility for it and owning up to it. Now it’s a quest to, ‘What do I do with this? How can I right this?’ And make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
He mentioned that he was eager to learn about what these individuals were up to, as they had established themselves and been present for some time. Initially, he can be a bit timid in new situations, but he found himself quickly grasping the concept. It became an exciting endeavor for him, something he eagerly anticipated.
As it happens, Dax – who frequently shares his personal experiences with sobriety – was a reliable source of support, regularly attending their 30-person support group meetings.
Brad expressed that he held it in high regard, saying, “It was incredibly open and sincere. It had an amazing ability to make any topic humorous during the night. It carried significant value for me, truly.
Brad Pitt, who starred in Fight Club, confessed that he started attending meetings following an argument with Angelina about his alcohol consumption on a private plane, which ultimately resulted in their separation. He later told The New York Times in 2019, “I had pushed things as far as they could go, so I chose to give up my drinking rights.
For more celebrities who’ve shared their sobriety journey, keep reading.
Last October, I proudly shared on Instagram that I had been living a sober life for an entire year, following my commitment made exactly a year prior.
As a lifestyle guide, I’d put it this way: “More than five years back, I realized that my excessive reliance on alcohol and substances was becoming unbearable. I attempted to break free from these vices then, acknowledging their grip on me was becoming too oppressive. Little did I know, the journey towards sobriety would prove challenging.
I’ve successfully navigated a challenging journey and reached a milestone of one year without alcohol. This achievement fills me with immense pride, perhaps more so than any other accomplishment in my life. To those who may be grappling, please remember there’s always hope and help available. Let’s not allow shame to hinder our progress. Together, we can triumph over this.
Later in life, he looked back on his battle with addiction and the great efforts he made to conceal his fight against it.
In the March 2024 episode of his wife Jenny Mollen’s “All the Fails” podcast, he shared that he is attending therapy and making efforts to address certain issues. However, after having a productive therapy session, he decided to leave therapy, went to the liquor store, purchased a bottle of vodka, consumed it, and then drove home as a means of escaping his current state and avoiding feelings.
He mentioned, “I had everything planned perfectly. I made sure not to drink so much that I couldn’t talk to you. I kept replenishing the bottles at the bar frequently.
The two-time winner of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Cup has openly discussed her past misuse of Adderall while dealing with injuries during her college soccer days.
In a 2025 episode of the “Question Everything with Danielle Robay” podcast, she admitted that she had become severely dependent on Adderall and had been abusing it excessively. She would frequently take it and often went without sleep for extended periods. It got out of hand, as she felt like she might have a heart attack from the excessive use. She confessed to crushing and snorting the drug, and acknowledged that it was causing significant issues in her life.
However, in the midst of her struggle, her college coach Anson Dorrance was there to support her.
She shared that the situation became extremely dim, necessitating significant changes, to which Anson suggested reading books. She began reading a book titled “Man’s Search for Meaning“, focusing on the themes of suffering and reinterpretation. This book profoundly impacted her life.
The Valley star shared his decades-long battle with drugs in March 2025 after going to rehab.
On the March 4 edition of Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast, Jax confessed that he struggles with addiction, specifically regarding cocaine use. Admitting it publicly is challenging for him.
He said, “This issue has come up intermittently in my life ever since I turned 23, and here I am now at 45. At certain points, I managed to avoid it, but other times, I found myself getting deeply involved.
Apart from quitting cocaine, Jax has also chosen to stop consuming alcohol. He shared his reasoning by saying, “While I don’t necessarily believe I have an alcohol problem, I find that they often go together. I can’t use cocaine without drinking first. Therefore, I decided to give up both substances. I am happy to announce that I am currently 82 or 83 days sober, which marks the longest stretch in my life without either of them.
In 2022, the actor playing Spider-Man decided to quit alcohol consumption after experiencing a sense of being trapped by it. On the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, he admitted to being addicted to alcohol without hesitation. “I believe that anyone who drinks daily may have an issue,” he reflected.
The actor added, “Then comes the point when you think, ‘Oh, I wish I hadn’t had that final drink.’ The next morning, you find yourself with a dreadful headache.
After adopting the new lifestyle, Holland found that he’s been sleeping more soundly and managing issues more effectively.
He confided, “Issues that used to upset me greatly on the set, I could now handle with ease.” He added, “My mental focus was significantly improved. I felt more robust and energetic.
The main character from “Hunt for Red October” seldom discusses his long-standing sobriety, a journey that started approximately four decades ago.
He mentioned that the topic doesn’t come up frequently, but he does bring it up occasionally when it’s appropriate. As for himself, he has been sober for 39 years, having achieved sobriety on February 23, 1985.
Discussing his life following his relocation from New York City to Los Angeles in 1983, Alec described his struggle, saying, “For two years, I faced an intense challenge every single day. It seemed as though I inhaled a line of cocaine from here to Saturn. We brought it back home. Essentially, cocaine was like coffee during that time; everyone was using it throughout the day.
And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.
Today, he relies on the city around him.
He mentioned that New York brings him peace, revealing his home. As he strolls around, he discovers new facets of it he’d never seen before. A building might catch his eye, and he’ll exclaim, “I never realized that about that structure, those doors!” He enjoys meals and coffee breaks with friends in the city.
Back in April 2024, the actress who starred in The Princess Diaries announced that she has been sober for over five years. In an interview with the New York Times, she expressed, “This achievement marks a significant moment for me.
Her thoughts were straightforward. She confided, “I instinctively knew it wasn’t suitable for me,” and she added, “It felt excessively intense to say ‘But nothing,’ but that was the case. If you have an allergy or experience severe reactions to something, you don’t dispute it. So I chose not to argue with it anymore.
She’s pleased with her choice, as she put it, “I find things are improving since then.” For her, it served as a source of self-pity, which is not something she enjoys indulging in.
During her acceptance speech for the 2018 Woman of the Year Award at the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a home offering recovery for women dealing with substance and alcohol addiction, Moore discussed the self-damaging trajectory that almost halted her professional journey.
In my journey, I’ve come to recognize pivotal instances that have molded my identity and determined my course. At the outset of my professional life, I found myself slipping into a self-damaging trajectory, where even my achievements failed to alleviate the gnawing feeling of inadequacy within me.
Reflecting on those days, I can honestly say that I held no regard for my own worth. This self-destructive pattern swiftly propelled me towards a critical juncture, and at the time, it was unclear what had triggered this descent. Looking back now, I’m inclined to believe it may have been some form of divine guidance.
Moore expressed gratitude in 2012 to two individuals whom she barely knew for presenting her with a turning point. She humorously mentioned, “Unless I was deceased, I had to appear,” and further explained that she was offered an opportunity to alter the trajectory of her life before it crumbled completely.
Moore pointed out that others seemed to know a side of him he didn’t recognize himself. He expressed immense gratitude for this insight, stating that without their faith in him, he wouldn’t be where he is now.
Cyrus revealed in the year 2022 that she has been recuperating from her Xanax addiction since 2020. Speaking with Rolling Stone, she stated, “Xanax provided a sense of structure during the time when I truly needed it due to my lack of desire to simply sit around and ruminate in my thoughts. It brought me hope.
The singer remarked, “When I discovered I could momentarily mute the world and dull your suffering, that was the end of it.
In my own words, I admitted that during a certain period in my life, my friends, unknowingly or not, tacitly endorsed my drug use, which eventually spiraled into an abyssal chasm of darkness. However, during the pandemic, I found myself grappling with difficulties and realizing that I was emotionally detached. I would often find myself dozing off, struggling to stay awake, and unable to maintain focus or keep my eyes open, as I had ventured too deep into a state of oblivion.
She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”
16 years ago, the former star of “Parenthood” had been living a sober life until 2020 when he resumed drug use, specifically Vicodin, following a motorcycle accident.
Over the past two months or so, it seems like he’s been using them quite a bit, he mentioned during his Armchair Expert podcast. He’s prescribed these medications and uses them in certain amounts, but he also takes additional doses.
He went on saying, “I can’t stand it anymore. I’ve been deceiving others. I know I should stop, but my tolerance is escalating so fast that I find myself consuming eight 30s daily, a quantity I recognize will lead to severe withdrawal symptoms. This realization makes me increasingly fearful and lonely, and I carry this massive secret with me.
In 2018, the actress who played Halloween opened up about her decade-long struggle with opiate addiction that started in the late ’80s following a minor cosmetic surgery to address her family’s genetic puffy eyes. This prescription dramatically altered her life. “For ten years, I was stealing and deceiving,” she confided in People magazine. “Nobody knew. Nobody.
In the summer of 1998, when her sister came to visit and brought prescription painkillers for a rib injury, Curtis realized she had reached her lowest point. She knew the pills were in her guest room closet during her sister’s stay. Overwhelmed, she confessed to taking all the opiates before her sister left, fearing she would notice the missing pills. To come clean, Curtis wrote a note and left it on her sister’s suitcase. Upon returning home, her sister embraced her, expressing love, worry, and refusal to stand by as Curtis took her own life.
On February 3, 1999, she went to her initial meeting, which happened to be the same day she shared her struggle with her filmmaker spouse, Christopher Guest. “He couldn’t believe it, as he hadn’t suspected a thing,” Curtis stated, mentioning that she’s been sober since then.
In 2021, Barrymore, who has previously sought treatment for alcohol and substance abuse, announced a significant achievement in her recovery journey. During an appearance on CBS Mornings, she revealed, “For the first time in a long while, I’m ready to share this: It’s been two and a half years since my last drink of alcohol.” She further explained, “I’ve come to understand that it was not beneficial for me in my life.
I exclaimed, “It’s just amazing! When we bare our souls, uncover who we truly are, and showcase what we’ve tirelessly labored on, it’s both exhilarating and exposing in one breath.
Later on, Barrymore clarified to the Los Angeles Times that she shuns the term “sober” as she doesn’t wish to be perceived as a “perfectly pious Puritan.
In 2023, she expressed, “For a long time, I told myself, ‘I can conquer this, I’ll find the solution.’ But eventually, it dawned on me: ‘This thing, I’ve never truly mastered it, and I probably won’t.’
In the 2000s, the actor from the film “A Star Is Born” battled an addiction to cocaine. During this time, his friend, Will Arnett, took a stand and directly addressed his concerning behavior.
During his 2022 interview on the Smartless podcast, Cooper shared that moment was when he first acknowledged his struggles with substance abuse, an experience he would never forget.
Giving credit to Arnett, Cooper stated, “He was instrumental in my decision to live sober. By bravely discussing difficult topics with me, he guided me towards choosing to alter the course of my life.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my gratitude towards Bradley Cooper, who played the pivotal role in my life transformation. He was the beacon that guided me through the darkest times when I wrestled with alcohol addiction. In a heartfelt moment at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards, I publicly acknowledged him saying, “I owe my sobriety to this extraordinary man.” Since then, each day has been filled with unparalleled happiness.
In September 2023, the former star of Cruel Intentions posted on Instagram that it had been “the longest stretch since my teen years that I haven’t had any form of nicotine or cannabis in my body (along with other substances)”.
In my own words, I’m deeply grateful for the liberation I experience as I break free from addiction’s grasp and detach from the need for substances. Embracing sobriety brings a sense of lucidity and an enhanced spiritual bond that truly feels empowering.
In 2018, during her tour, the singer proudly marked six years without alcohol. However, later in the same year, she left fans astonished when she released the candid song “Sober”, disclosing that she had unfortunately slipped and resorted to drinking again.
Mom, I’m truly sorry but I’ve fallen off the wagon again. Dad, I hope you can forgive me for the spilled drinks on the floor. To those who have always stood by me, we’ve been here before and I’m sorry, I’ve relapsed,” she sang.
A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.
Two weeks ago, she posted on Instagram that she’s been open about her struggle with addiction. She went on to explain that this condition doesn’t go away by itself; it requires ongoing effort to overcome. Unfortunately, she now needs time to recover and focus on her sobriety. The support you all have given her will never be forgotten, and she eagerly awaits the day when she can say she has emerged victorious from this battle. For now, she continues to fight.
In 2018, she spoke about her struggles with addictions to sex and alcohol. “My addictions tend to shift. They change places. When I was younger, I believe I battled some form of a sexual addiction, yes, the notion that everything could be resolved through sex,” she explained, then went on to discuss the moment she recognized she had a concerning drinking issue.
She recalled hitting a low point when she was alone at home, with two bottles of wine already consumed and reaching for a third. Suddenly, she paused and said, “Wait a minute. Here you are, all alone in this house, about to finish your third bottle of wine? There might be an issue here that needs addressing.
She shared, “Instead of gradually phasing something out, I tend to completely stop it suddenly, which is known as going ‘cold turkey’. You see, I have a tendency to become engrossed in things quickly. I need to be mindful and keep myself in check. The reason isn’t the action itself, but the motivation behind it. It’s not about the act, but why you’re doing it. If you enjoy having a lot of sex, that’s fine, but it’s essential to examine the underlying reasons for your actions.
One of the Backstreet Boys bandmates experimented with drugs for the first time prior to filming the music video for “The Call” in 2000. In a later interview with Good Morning America, he admitted that he felt incredibly energized during the shoot, almost as if he was on the walls. After struggling for years, he managed to achieve sobriety in 2021 and experienced numerous positive outcomes within a year, such as shedding 32 pounds over a period of seven months by eliminating alcohol and fast food from his diet.
In an interview with Today in September 2022, he shared that consuming alcohol led to an increase in his weight, but it also took a toll on his emotional well-being.
Following Mac Miller’s untimely demise, the rapper known as Bow Wow admitted on Twitter that he had battled a dependency on cough syrup in the past. In a series of tweets, he cautioned the youth against drug use and shared his personal experiences:
“To the young ones – stop with these foolish drugs,” he began. “I’m going to let you in on a secret. During the time me and Omarion were working on our album ‘Face Off’, I was addicted to lean every day! When you saw me on BET arguing with Torae, I was high on lean. My attitude changed everything – my fans turned against me, even my family. I never promoted lean in my songs, but during the UCP tour with Chris Brown, I was drinking 4-Hydroxycodone at least seven times a day. I was addicted until our show in Cincinnati… I came off stage and passed out; I woke up in the hospital, suffering from withdrawals.”
“I have never felt pain like that before,” Bow Wow continued. “Despite it being summer, I walked around with three hoodies on because I was so cold. I missed the Chicago show of that tour and the Baltimore show because I was high and sick! That’s no way to live! Kick that stuff! Be a good son or daughter. Be the best you. I’m going to start being more vocal. We need to save the youth from an early demise. Parents, watch your kids closely. Talk to them. We want you to live, not die from drug overdose.”
“To this day, my stomach issues…will never be the same,” he concluded. “Staying drug-free is the way to go. Smarten up, tighten up out here. We can’t afford to lose any more of you. Not one! I love all of you. Young artists everywhere – don’t follow a trend. Break the cycle. PEACE.
2018 was a year of unwavering honesty for me, as I released both my fourth album, “No Shame,” and my memoir, “My Thoughts Exactly.” Throughout this period, I found myself confronting the darkest aspects of my addiction struggles, specifically my excessive use of cocaine and alcohol that often left me in a state of parasitic drunkenness.
A pivotal moment came when an unfortunate incident occurred at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party, where I inadvertently headbutted Orlando Bloom, leading to a brief loss of consciousness. This event, coupled with the concern from my loved ones, particularly Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, prompted an intervention that ultimately served as a turning point in my life.
In an interview with The Guardian, she admitted, “I felt nothing could touch or fulfill me. One morning during those bleak times, I found myself contemplating, ‘Perhaps I should try heroin since nothing else appears effective.’
In the 1980s, an actor from The Parent Trap struggled with a cocaine addiction that eventually led him to rehab in 1990. Later, he shared his story on the show Today, stating that during his childhood in the ’60s and ’70s, there was a significantly more lenient view toward drug use compared to today’s standards.
2018 saw him openly acknowledge that he had been using cocaine nearly every day during the 1980s. He confessed to frequent late-night prayers to God for deliverance, pleading “Take this away from me and I promise never to do it again, as I have an hour before I need to be at work.” But by 4 in the afternoon, he would often find himself thinking, “It’s not so bad after all.
He shared an intense, personal encounter he referred to as a ‘white light moment’, where he envisioned his own death or losing all that mattered to him deeply. This left him in such a state that he had to sit down with his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, and explain the situation. After this, he decided it was time to seek help. Thus, ended his relationship with cocaine.
2018 saw me, Ryan Lochte, realizing the need for change after a regrettable incident at a Newport Beach hotel. For years, I’ve been grappling with alcohol addiction, and unfortunately, it has led me down a destructive path. Recognizing that I require professional help to conquer this challenge, I am immediately seeking treatment to turn things around.
Ryan understands that overcoming this illness is crucial for him to avoid making regrettable choices later on, to strive as an excellent husband and father, and if he aims to compete again at the pinnacle of swimming during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
As a committed devotee, I can attest that my decision to abstain from alcohol was significantly influenced by my relationship with Melanie Lynskey. While it’s often advised not to seek sobriety for someone else, her presence in my life served as a powerful motivator on this journey.
He shared during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2023, “At one point, I realized how extraordinary she was and believed she would be perfect for someone more deserving. I didn’t see myself as worthy or stable enough to match her level.
However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.
In the beginning stages of their relationship, he found it less difficult to claim that his actions were motivated by her well-being, as he felt his own self-worth wasn’t particularly high. He didn’t value his own pain as much as he valued avoiding causing her distress. Consequently, it was easier for him to assert, “I’m doing this for her.” However, now, he is engaged in the endeavor for his own sake.
For almost ten years now, the country musician has maintained his sobriety, but the journey to reach this point was challenging. His struggle with alcohol and painkillers started shortly after he graduated from high school and persisted even as his career flourished. He always carried a black leather laptop bag containing bottles of Jagermeister or vodka, keeping it within easy reach at all times. As he shared in an earlier interview with People, every hour and a half to two hours, he would take two or three strong pulls from the bottle. Every three or four hours, he would need a couple of pills.
He confessed that it didn’t hinder his achievement, saying, “I wasn’t fumbling about throughout the day.” Instead, he was operating at full capacity – composing more tunes back then than he does today. That was the frightening aspect.
Towards the end of 2011, he was admitted to the hospital due to pancreatitis, and was warned that if he didn’t stop drinking, he might not live to see his next birthday. He attempted to make changes on his own, thinking things like, “I’ll just take two pills today. I’ll only drink this much from my bottle and mark the bottle,” but it rarely lasted for long because someone would always throw a party.
Eventually, he recognized his need for assistance and admitted himself into rehab on December 18, 2011. “I reached a point where I realized I couldn’t handle it alone,” Gilbert explained. “It infuriated me immensely and brought great shame. I’m a person of considerable determination, but this was the one area in my life that I couldn’t manage to overcome.
