A month ago to the day, Star Wars Battlefront 2 – the 2017 multiplayer shooter in the vein of Battlefield, produced by DICE and Electronic Arts (EA) – experienced a tremendous revival as fans commemorated May the 4th, were elated by the quality of Andor Season 2, and demanded a third installment. Now, it’s gaining traction once more, with its player numbers soaring even higher than they were initially.
Over the past weekend, I’ve noticed a significant surge in Battlefront 2’s player base on Steam. The game was previously averaging around 10-15,000 concurrent players since its renaissance last month, but this weekend, it skyrocketed to an impressive 30-35,000 players. Sunday saw a new peak record of 35,892 players, more than doubling the previous numbers.
The significant reduction in price for Battlefront 2, making it only $3.99 or $4.99 during EA’s Summer Sale event, has likely contributed to its resurgence. Originally priced at $39.99 on PC, this deal brings the cost down to a fraction of its original price across platforms like Steam, EA app, and the Epic Games Store. Sadly, it remains at its full console price of $19.99 on PlayStation, but is reduced to $4.99 on Xbox.
An alternative way to enjoy more gaming experiences is by subscribing to an EA Play membership. Interestingly, this perk comes bundled with every Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscription.
If you happen to be curious, those prices for Battlefront 2 are truly the lowest they’ve ever been! With a record-breaking number of players enjoying the game right now, it seems like an ideal moment to join the action in a galaxy far, far away. In fact, a reliable source recently reported that over 160,000 players were online simultaneously across all platforms at peak hours. Given that the Steam numbers currently surpass those figures, I wouldn’t be surprised if the total number of players now is even higher!
Indeed, the buzz surrounding this game is remarkable, and it truly lives up to the hype. Battlefront 2 stands out as an incredibly engaging arcade-style multiplayer shooter. What’s more, even eight years after its release, it remains one of the most visually stunning and sonically impressive games in the industry. From a visual and auditory standpoint, the game does an immersive job of bringing iconic Star Wars battles and locations to life, offering a visual and auditory treat – particularly if you have a high-quality screen and headphones like my cherished Alienware Pro Headset.
The initial rollout faced a very bumpy beginning because it incorporated pay-to-win loot boxes, which were under intense scrutiny by everyone, including government bodies. Once these were revamped, however, it regained its footing and gained significant popularity. DICE continued to provide regular content updates until 2020 when they shifted their focus towards Battlefield 2042.

It’s clear now that the original direction of Battlefront didn’t sit well with many long-term fans, but over time, Battlefront 2 evolved into an exceptional game. I’m thrilled to observe both newcomers and veterans rediscovering their love for it once more.
I’m quite optimistic that we’ll see a Star Wars: Battlefront 3 eventually, but considering a rumor that it was rejected by EA due to licensing expenses and the fact that DICE is currently working on Battlefield (alongside three other studios), the possibility seems rather low. As Han Solo once said, “never count me out,” so while another installment might not happen, we can still appreciate Star Wars: Battlefront 2 as long as EA maintains its servers active.
