Although lightsabers are famously known for their dramatic duels and unique sound, people often underestimate their versatility in all the action. These iconic weapons serve more purposes than just cutting through robots or blocking laser shots; they have shown remarkable adaptability throughout the Star Wars saga.
Delve into the myriad ways lightsabers can be utilized, from essential survival scenarios to unforeseen defensive tactics and even some truly peculiar applications. We’ll stir up your recollections and examine seven lesser-known abilities of lightsabers.
1) Gain Access
As a follower of the ways of the Jedi, I understand that lightsabers, while destructive in their full potential against living beings, can be an indispensable tool when wielded against inanimate objects. In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, my masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn encounter a sealed blast door on the Trade Federation battleship. Rather than resorting to forceful means or explosives, they demonstrate patience and precision by carefully melting through the door with their lightsabers.
In various scenarios across the expansive Star Wars storyline, characters who wield lightsabers – whether they be Jedi or not – employ these weapons for similar purposes. For instance, in ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’, Ahsoka Tano uses her pair of lightsabers to carve a circular gap in the ground, revealing a hidden safe. Such instances, along with numerous others, demonstrate that lightsabers are versatile cutting tools, capable of circumventing security systems when a more straightforward approach may not be the best choice.
2) Become a Helicopter
In my humble opinion, as a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, you’ll be hard-pressed to find lightsabers more distinctive than those showcased across the franchise’s diverse media. Case in point: the dual-bladed sabers wielded by the formidable Inquisitors, first introduced in Star Wars Rebels. These Jedi hunters have a knack for wielding weapons that echo the legendary Darth Maul’s distinctive design. However, they elevate the game by incorporating an innovative circular hilt between their blades, enabling them to rotate their sabers menacingly, resembling a lethal spinning fan.
In the chase with Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger on Star Wars Rebels, the Grand Inquisitor showcases an unexpected application of his spinning lightsaber. Instead of just using it for battle, he spins the blades to fly momentarily, enabling him to hover and gain an upper hand in the air. This inventive use demonstrates the versatility of some lightsaber designs and how Force-users can innovatively employ their weapons beyond traditional fighting techniques.
3) Dissecting Dead Animals
Everyone’s beloved smuggler can handle a lightsaber when needed! In “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”, Luke Skywalker gets stranded on Hoth and loses contact with his friends. As the cold climate takes its toll, Han Solo locates him and uses Luke’s lightsaber for an unexpected task in a survival situation. To save their shared tauntaun, Han slices it open with the weapon when it dies.
In the frigid environment of Hoth, Han carefully places Luke, who’s hypothermic and injured, within the dead tauntaun’s body cavity for warmth to help him survive the night. Remarkably, the lightsaber, used under such dire circumstances, proves its swift and remarkably efficient nature in the most desperate situations.
4) Weld and Repair Electronics
In the series “Star Wars Rebels“, Ezra Bridger employs his lightsaber for purposes beyond mere fighting. On numerous instances, he employs the precise heat of his blade to weld and mend damaged gadgets and machinery, frequently in crucial moments. For example, he uses it to repair a faulty ship part or reactivate a dormant circuit, setting him apart from other Jedi due to his exceptional command over his weapon.
The precise control over its energy emission enables the lightsaber to perform intricate tasks that go beyond mere slicing for destruction or combat. This showcases the Jedi’s ingenuity and underscores the multifaceted utility of their prized possession, demonstrating that it can be just as effectively used for construction and restoration as it is for devastation.
5) Create a Force Barrier
Jedi can use their lightsabers as a conduit for the Force, allowing them to generate temporary shields. In the movie Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan skillfully employs his lightsaber to absorb and divert Count Dooku’s potent Force lightning, safeguarding himself from the destructive assault. It appears that instead of simply blocking it, he nullifies its power.
Consequently, a lightsaber functions as a vessel for Force energy, intensifying a Jedi’s defensive prowess against attacks that would otherwise be too powerful. This illustrates a harmonious blend of weapon and power, underscoring the idea that a Jedi’s real might stems from their bond with the Force, with the lightsaber acting as an extension of that energy.
6) Provide Light in Darkness
Apart from its fighting and practical uses, the persistent and intense radiance of a lightsaber can also have a straightforward, useful application: it illuminates. In dim settings like the dismal insides of non-functioning spacecraft, abandoned tombs, or extensive cave networks, activating a lightsaber instantly offers an exceptionally bright light source, frequently being the only one accessible.
Frequently in the Star Wars series, characters are observed using their blades not solely for combat, but also to illuminate dark corridors or provide a clearer view of their vicinity. This seemingly minor yet crucial purpose transforms the deadliest tool into an essentially luminous device.
7) Cauterize Wounds
Although it might sound gruesome, it’s worth noting that lightsabers have an inherent ability to cauterize wounds due to their intense heat. When a limb gets sliced by a lightsaber, the scorching blade instantaneously seals the flesh and blood vessels at the point of contact, thereby limiting substantial blood loss. This is a harsh yet indisputable characteristic of lightsaber battles.
In situations where prompt medical care may not be immediately accessible in the universe we inhabit, this swift searing procedure, though undeniably grueling and distressing for the recipient, can remarkably serve as a lifesaver. It’s a sobering demonstration of the power hidden within the tool’s energy, manifesting instantly and, albeit horrifyingly, as a means to convert a lethal attack into an agonizing yet swift form of emergency first aid.
