New Superman Trailer Confirms the Man of Steel Has One of His Most Underused Powers in the DCU

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, who possesses abilities that outshine even the most extraordinary human feats. This Man of Steel is not just swift like an arrow, but faster than a speeding bullet; he’s not merely powerful, but more potent than a mighty locomotive; and he can effortlessly clear heights that would leave ordinary men gasping, leaping tall buildings in a single bound. His extraordinary powers, including flight, superhuman strength, remarkable speed, unparalleled durability, and the fierce power of heat vision, have all been tantalizingly glimpsed in the trailers for the James Gunn-directed film. In these previews, we’ve seen him locking horns with the enigmatic Ultraman, engaging in intense combat with the Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), and squaring off against Lex Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) formidable army of armored Raptors.

Among Superman’s abilities, one that hasn’t been frequently seen is his superhuman breath, also known as the Man of Steel‘s freeze breath. Although he’s more recognized for less flashy powers like enhanced senses and X-ray vision, his ability to freeze things is prominently demonstrated in the latest online teaser trailer (which you can see below).

Initially, the video captures Superman rescuing a citizen of Metropolis from being squashed by a gigantic monster-sized kaiju that had brought down a skyscraper. Later in the scene, we see him using his superhuman breath to push a dog away to safety while he struggles under the immense weight of the kaiju’s talons.

Despite being incredibly powerful, Superman isn’t completely invincible. Previews have revealed that he will come into contact with green kryptonite – his most significant vulnerability aside from magic – and he appears to be in a weakened state when his Superman Robots restore him using the sun’s healing energy at the Fortress of Solitude.

Recently, Gunn expressed that he wished for Superman to have weaknesses. He didn’t desire a Superman capable of destroying entire planets with a single punch.

In comparison to established superheroes such as Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, the Superman portrayed by James Gunn may not be as potent as past cinematic versions at this stage.

In essence, Gunn is stating that they’re constructing an entirely new universe, which leaves one wondering about the role of a winged girl in such grand scheme. Despite being less powerful, Guy Gardner possesses significant strength. All characters share this power, but some prefer Batman because he can be defeated. Consequently, we have a Superman who can be defeated as well.

I’m thrilled to share that in this upcoming DC Studios film, I find myself admiring the stellar cast. David Corenswet dons the iconic roles of Clark Kent and Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan brings Lois Lane to life. Nicholas Hoult takes on the menacing Lex Luthor.
