Microsoft launches Intel-exclusive Surface Laptop 5G with reengineered design — but it’s SHOCKINGLY expensive

You can now pre-order Microsoft’s eagerly awaited 5G version of the Surface Laptop 7, with deliveries slated to start on August 26 as confirmed by the company. This device can be purchased through Microsoft’s official store or commercial partner outlets, and it operates on Intel Core Ultra series 2 processors.

The announcement for the 5G-enabled Surface Laptop 7 was made earlier this year, with Microsoft indicating that it would take some time before it could be purchased. However, the wait is now concluded as the device can now be ordered in various regions such as the U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, and many more.

It’s no surprise that the Surface Laptop 7 with 5G comes with a hefty price tag, as it’s Microsoft’s most expensive 5G product yet, starting from $1,799. This model features an Intel Core Ultra 5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD storage. Interestingly, the 5G version is currently available only in a 13.8-inch screen size and weighs approximately 3 pounds.

The great news is you have the option to upgrade the 5G model with a superior processor, larger RAM, and additional storage. It reaches its limit at an Intel Core Ultra 7, 32GB RAM, and 1TB SSD storage, priced at $2,699. This is nearly a $1,000 more expensive than the basic 5G configuration.

Every model of Surface Laptop 5G offers both a traditional nanoSIM slot and eSIM compatibility. The physical nanoSIM slot is positioned on the right side of the device, near Microsoft’s exclusive magnetic Surface Connect port. It can be easily removed with a SIM ejector tool.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that all versions of the 5G models are compatible with Copilot+. These models boast a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) delivering over 40 teraops of power. From now on, all Surface PCs will be equipped to support Copilot+.

It’s an almost all-new Surface Laptop

Microsoft fundamentally revamped the Surface Laptop 5G, focusing on enhancing its compatibility with 5G connectivity. The company claims they’ve developed a novel multi-layered laminate substance that enables 5G radio waves to penetrate the laptop’s body without affecting performance.

This novel material gives the Surface Laptop an unprecedented appearance, differentiating it from any other Surface Laptop sold so far. It boasts a two-tone design, with a black surface on the keyboard area, while the edges and the frame of the chassis are silver.

The structure of this gadget incorporates 5G transmitters that encircle the entire device. Microsoft claims that they’ve positioned these antennas at a higher level compared to other 5G laptops. This move, according to them, should minimize interference and strengthen, maintain, and ensure a more robust, reliable, and consistent 5G connection.

As an eager enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the latest Surface Laptop 5G has made its way into the professional Surface Laptop 7 lineup. However, this means that the 5G model won’t be available at your go-to consumer retailers like Amazon or Best Buy. Instead, you can get your hands on the Surface Laptop 5G through Microsoft’s commercial partners, or directly from the Microsoft Store for business.

It’s possible to purchase the Surface Laptop 5G, but it won’t often be discounted. Sadly, there are no current plans from Microsoft to release the Surface Laptop 5G through consumer outlets, which also suggests we might not see a version of the Surface Laptop 5G with a Snapdragon processor in this generation.

Smaller Surface PCs also launch for business

Today, Microsoft is introducing compact Surface PCs designed specifically for business clients. Initially unveiled in May as consumer-only models, the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch are now accessible to businesses as well.

In contrast to the consumer versions, the business models of both the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch offer more RAM options, going up to 24GB, and also feature an anti-reflective screen. Consumer models, however, are limited to a maximum of 16GB RAM.

Microsoft has made a significant effort to clearly distinguish between consumer and business versions of its Surface line in the past year. Initially, the Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10 were exclusively offered to business clients. On the other hand, the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 were initially marketed towards consumers. Later on, these models were updated with Intel processors to cater to business users as well.
