The open-world camping adventure game, titled “Outbound“, is set to debut on PlayStation 5, joining its already announced releases for Xbox Series X and Steam (PC), as confirmed by publishers Silver Lining Games and developers Square Glade Games. This launch is scheduled for the year 2026.
Here is an overview of the game, via Square Glade Games co-founder Marc Volger on PlayStation Blog:
Hello! It’s Square Glade Games speaking. We can’t wait to announce that we’re introducing our enchanting open-world adventure game, “Outbound,” on PlayStation 5. Whether you prefer to play solo or with a group of up to four friends, “Outbound” places you in the driver’s seat of an empty camper van and embarks you on a quest to forage, create, and establish your ideal home as you learn to navigate the shifting surroundings.
I’m Marc Volger, one of the founders of our studio, and today I’m excited to present to you all “Outbound” within our PlayStation community! We’ll be diving deeper into the exciting features our game offers, with some assistance from my fellow co-founder Tobi Schnackenberg, who will share insights about the creative spark behind this upcoming title.
In simpler terms, after testing our game during its initial stages (Alpha), we observed what players liked the most and came up with a term called “cozyvival”. This term captures their affection for the relaxing, stress-free environment of living in a van, combined with the rewarding mechanics of survival such as resource management, material gathering, and food cultivation. Most other games either emphasize one aspect over the other, but we believe that “cozyvival” encapsulates the appealing balance our players appreciate – it’s the ideal spot where Outbound thrives.
Chill Solo Adventure or Cheery Multiplayer Road Trip?
Playing solo, Outbound offers an enjoyable off-grid vibe as you collect resources and gradually enhance your camper van at your leisure. It’s like being the skipper of your own vessel, providing a sense of tranquility and self-assurance. While it can be played with up to three companions, this alters the essence of the experience in a substantial manner.
Sharing the journey with others makes Outbound feel more like an exciting adventure, much like going on a real-life road trip with friends. We found this energy transformation delightful, so while not mandatory, multiplayer is an essential aspect from our viewpoint. Additionally, as we transitioned Outbound to PlayStation 5, we saw an opportunity to leverage the PlayStation Portal. Since the PlayStation ecosystem doesn’t necessitate any adjustments to be compatible with the portal, we were thrilled at the prospect of friends gathering around Portal devices, playing together. The convenience of carrying it during travel (perhaps on a road trip) is something we hope our players will appreciate.
Grand Fields of Inspiration
Tobi shares that part of what fueled the creation of Outbound was a personal road trip I took from Germany to the Netherlands. During this journey, I passed by an attractive vintage camper van as it traveled past a field filled with solar panels and windmills. At that time, we were in the early stages of prototyping, and witnessing this scene ignited the concept of designing it around an electric vehicle, keeping sustainability at the forefront.
Tobi adds, “Sustainability is a major focus in our design, which we’ve integrated thoughtfully. The sun, wind, and rain serve as primary energy sources, while collecting trash rewards you with plans for van improvements. These are just a few examples of how Outbound emphasizes sustainability through gameplay, and we reflect this commitment visually too, such as depicting sailboats instead of oil tankers and cargo ships.
Pet That Good Pup
As a fellow dog enthusiast embarking on your Outbound adventure, I’m thrilled to share that you’ll have a furry friend tagging along! Not only can you cuddle with this lovable companion, but you also get to personalize it by giving it a name of your choice. This four-legged buddy adds an extra dimension to the immersive experience – players can even train them to retrieve resources, transport them back to the vehicle, and much more. Rest assured, this isn’t just a cute addition; they play an essential role in your journey!
Video games frequently transport us into captivating fantasies, immersing us in stunning realms where we battle mythical beasts using weapons and spells. However, some games delve into fantasies that are closer to our everyday lives, and it’s in this realm that the game Outbound thrives. We can’t wait to send you on an exhilarating journey when Outbound arrives on PlayStation 5!
