Lately, Gearbox Software has been unveiling more and more tidbits about the upcoming game Borderlands 4, as part of their marketing campaign. Recently, they gave a sneak peek at one of the in-game bosses – Inceptus – stating that “nothing packs a tougher punch than Inceptus”, due to requests from fans who wanted more challenging bosses.

View Urgent ForecastIn response to this post, Randy Pitchford, the studio head, has hinted that the boss fight with Inceptus is challenging but not as tough as some of the other bosses within the game. This implies there are several end-game battles left for players who have already equipped themselves with top-tier gear to face and conquer, providing them with suitable challenges.
On social media platform X, Pitchford stated something along the lines of ‘There are some bosses who really push it to the limit,’ and he acknowledged that Inceptus is particularly tough.
Among Borderlands enthusiasts, some are thrilled by Gearbox’s and Pitchford’s announcements about a potential Borderlands 4, while others express concern that the game might become excessively challenging if the developers prioritize tough bosses. One user expressed apprehension that while battling formidable foes could be enjoyable initially, it would become frustrating when repeatedly encountering them during loot farming.
One user on X expressed the hope that everyone wasn’t making the game excessively challenging by adding difficult bosses. They explained that if the bosses are too tough, it can become tiresome to keep farming and waste a lot of time without any guarantee of receiving rare drop items.
Graeme Timmins, who serves as the creative director, has shared on social media that Borderlands 4 will offer a more challenging experience compared to its predecessors in the series. Although it’s not as tough as the “hardcore” games, he emphasized that players should anticipate a more intense gaming experience with Borderlands 4 compared to the earlier titles.
In Timmins’ reply to a query about the game’s challenge level, he mentioned that the demo skipped ahead, making the initial part a bit trickier than what might be encountered at launch. He also added that “BL4” is somewhat more intense compared to its predecessors, but it remains casual rather than hardcore. If you find it too tough, you can always adjust the difficulty level to your liking!
Earlier this week, Pitchford and Gearbox’s Chief Creative Officer, Randy Varnell, announced that Borderlands 4 will incorporate extensive skill trees for players to tinker with their character designs. They highlighted that the upcoming looter shooter is anticipated to have a larger number of skills per character as compared to both Borderlands 2 and 3 combined.
In comparison to both Borderlands 3 and 2 combined, there are more unique skills per character,” Pitchford stated, humorously adding that “We’re putting in extra hours on Fridays just for you.” This comment was made after Varnell explained that the skill tree design enables four players using the same character to still have distinct gameplay styles.
The upcoming video game titled “Borderlands 4” is being developed for platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. The release date is scheduled for September 12, with a price point of $69.99.
Actually… I can think of some bosses that go harder. Inceptus is pretty hard, though.

During the demonstration, the gameplay sped up, making the initial segment slightly tougher than what’s expected upon release. Compared to its predecessors, BL4 offers a higher intensity level, but it remains more casual rather than hardcore. If you find it challenging, feel free to adjust the difficulty setting to your liking!
