A brand-new Call of Duty: Warzone map has been revealed ahead of next week's COD Next showcase

What you need to know

  • Call of Duty NEXT is a showcase that highlights upcoming Call of Duty premium titles each year, along with changes made to Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile.
  • This year’s COD NEXT showcase is on August 28 at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET.
  • A new Warzone map, dubbed Area 99, was revealed on social media announcing what topics will be covered during COD NEXT 2024.

As a seasoned researcher and long-time fan of the Call of Duty franchise, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation as we approach the Call of Duty NEXT showcase on August 28. With the reveal of the new Warzone map, Area 99, it seems that Treyarch is once again taking the reins in the world of Call of Duty.

In a first since the launch of Urzikstan in Season 1 update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Warzone will introduce a completely new map called “Area 99”. This revelation was made on the official Call of Duty social media channels, also hinting at other exciting features coming up during COD NEXT event starting August 28. Since its rapid ascent in popularity in 2020, popular Call of Duty games have been integrated into the Warzone universe. Originally linked to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Activision discovered that tying marketing efforts for the subsequent release, Black Ops Cold War (2020), was effective. This move marked the beginning of a continuous strategy to connect each year’s title with Warzone. The success of this approach even led to the launch of Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 in conjunction with Modern Warfare 2 (2022), merging Warzone and premium titles into a single Call of Duty HQ launcher.

The result of that process has been a bit of a roller coaster, with players growing increasingly frustrated at the ever-expanding file sizes and a general disdain for new map designs from the community. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) brought with it the launch of a new mainline battle royale map, based on the fictional country of Urzikstan. Later seasonal updates added popular Resurgence mode maps Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep, remastered from their original Warzone 1.0 glory, back into the playlist rotation.

Leaks about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 have been consistent, and reliable sources within the COD community have asserted that there won’t be a primary battle royale map added after its launch in October. These same individuals are sticking to their guns, stating that Area 99 will be a compact map for the Resurgence mode, similar to Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep. The leakers suggest that Area 99 will be introduced as part of Season 1 content for Black Ops 6. They also hint at alterations in Urzikstan’s design and Points of Interest (POIs) around the same period, followed by a revamped version of Verdansk, which may appear with Season 2 or 3, set to debut early in 2025.

The official Call of Duty social media post has revealed that the new map will debut from the Treyarch studio, suggesting they’ve been working on its creation. However, only a single, heavily-texted image of the map was unveiled.

Activision has announced that in addition to the Call of Duty NEXT event, they will feature live gameplay for Area 99 as well as an in-depth exploration of the game’s features by Raven Software. The event will also include a live multiplayer gameplay session, an in-depth look at the new Zombies mode on Liberty Falls map, and a deep dive into the maps accessible during the Black Ops 6 open beta.

Fortunately, we don’t have much longer to find out more details about Area 99, as it will be unveiled during the Call of Duty NEXT event on August 28, starting at 9 AM Pacific Time (12 PM Eastern Time).
