As someone who has spent countless hours slaying monstrous beasts and crafting intricate gear, I must say that the latest reveal for Monster Hunter Wilds has me positively giddy with excitement! The new creatures unveiled, like the Congalala and its foul-smelling offspring, promise to provide a fresh challenge for even the most seasoned hunters.

On September 28, 2024, during the third day of the Tokyo Game Show 2024 event, Capcom unveiled a live gameplay demonstration for their upcoming action hit, Monster Hunter Wilds. This presentation featured the world’s inaugural in-game footage of the Scarlet Forest locale from Monster Hunter Wilds, as well as several monsters previously glimpsed in the last two cinematic trailers. Remarkably, an old monster that hasn’t been seen in a mainstream Monster Hunter game for many years also made a comeback.

Below, you’ll find a summary and evaluation of the gameplay demonstration for Monster Hunter Wilds at the Tokyo Game Show 2024.

The exploration in the Scarlet Forest, a significant habitat for hunting expeditions, initiates the presentation. But before delving into it, the player opts to take a short side trip to the Windward Plains biome. This is done to exhibit footage of one of the numerous new monsters unveiled for Monster Hunter Wilds, namely, the Quematrice.

This creature resembling a chicken is a fierce Brute Wyvern found in the Windward Plains, known for feeding on dead animals. It attacks enemies by shooting bursts of fire from its tail. After avoiding some of these flames, the player strategically leads the Quematrice towards a group of young Bird Wyverns and Talioth monsters with jagged peaks. The smaller creatures then attack the Brute Wyvern, showcasing the game’s Turf War feature.

In this scenario, the mechanic pits two kinds of monsters against each other in a dramatic fight, ending with one or both of them wounded or toppled over. This tactic is highly beneficial for players to employ during a hunt, as it inflicts heavy damage on their main target and makes it momentarily susceptible to attack, without the risk of immediate counterattack.

Following that brief diversion, the player continues onward towards the vibrant Scarlet Woods. This massive rainforest teems with an array of unique plants and animals that have evolved remarkable survival strategies to endure its varying conditions. Upon arrival, the player embarks on a hunt for various inhabitants of the Scarlet Woods, beginning with the Lala Barina.

This peculiar spider, resembling a ballerina in its movements, is a creature of the Temnoceran family. It catches its prey swiftly, not just with its claws or legs, but also with its stinger. Moreover, it can release harmful pollen from its body that has the power to paralyze if a player comes into physical contact with it.

In a valiant struggle, the player wields their colossal Greatsword against the Lala Barina, slicing through its tough hide. They also summon their swift Seikret mount for a quick switch to a Light Bowgun. From a safe vantage point, they fire at the spider using the Light Bowgun, eliminating the harmful paralysis pollen that Lana Barina releases to reduce the perils of maneuvering in battle. Subsequently, they strategically lead the Lala Barina towards a giant Fanged Beast named Doshaguma, intending for it to engage in a Turf War and inflict heavy damage on the Lala Barina, thus simplifying the fight slightly.

Following the battle with Lala Barina, the gameplay abruptly switches to fresh clips featuring another player chasing a brand-new beast unveiled during the Monster Hunter Wilds launch trailer – Uth Duna.

In the game, you’ll find the colossal Uth Duna creature, resembling a Leviathan, only appearing during the ‘Downpour’ weather condition in the Scarlet Forest. This area experiences periodic rainstorms as part of this weather effect. The player finds it challenging to inflict substantial damage on Uth Duna due to its body being shielded by a layer of watery material, acting like an absorbent barrier for incoming attacks.

After the Leviathan is provoked, it retaliates by executing a series of powerful belly dives, pinning the player down under its massive weight. In aquatic settings such as rivers, these belly flops even create small waves.

Concerned they aren’t ready yet for this battle, the player decides to postpone facing Uth Duna and instead chooses to hunt a familiar foe from veteran Monster Hunter enthusiasts – the Congalala.

In the world of Monster Hunter, the Congalala – a monster characterized as a Fanged Beast – has been present since Monster Hunter 2 on the PlayStation 2 and hasn’t made an appearance in a typical Monster Hunter game since Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. A hint about its comeback was dropped during the trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds, featuring armor resembling Congalala. However, its return has now been officially validated through this gameplay presentation.

This crossbreed between a hippo and a gorilla is often regarded as one of the foulest, most repugnant beasties a hunter could ever have the misfortune to encounter. It spends its days lazying about eating mushrooms, sleeping, and attacking anything that wanders into its personal space. After being rudely woken up by the player with a Mega Barrel Bomb explosion to the face, the Congalala proceeds to attack them alongside its young infants called Conga.

Instead of being agile, the Congalala isn’t known for its elegance, primarily resorting to chaotic arm swings, much like a frenzied individual. It also tends to stumble, often toppling itself forward in an attempt to push its solid abdomen into the player, knocking them down. Furthermore, it has a peculiar habit of emitting foul gas towards its opponents.

It’s crucial to prevent any unpleasant gas release as it could lead to intense humiliation, and moreover, it instills the ‘Stench’ condition upon you. The ‘Stench’ condition is particularly harmful because it renders all your belongings inaccessible due to their contamination with harmful substances. To remedy this situation, you’ll need to employ healing items known as Deodorants, which will clean and restore usability to your affected items once more.

The tricky Congalala isn’t limited to causing obnoxious gas that prevents item usage; it can also unleash a revolting breath attack capable of inflicting the Stench condition. Moreover, this creature has a knack for finding mushrooms which alter its breath attacks. This means it can make you sick with poison or leave you immobilized with paralysis, or even set you ablaze based on its diet.

Following a battle against Congalala (and unleashing a horde of bees by triggering a nearby hive with the Hook Slinger device), the gameplay wraps up with the player engaging in some relaxing fishing mini-games, and then socializing with the Wudwuds, a community of Lynian creatures residing within the Scarlet Forest.

In my adventures through Monster Hunter Wilds, I often run into non-player characters (NPCs) living in the diverse biomes. Engaging with these folks might lead to exciting side quests, and if I manage to fulfill these tasks, they can reward me handsomely!

New and classic monsters await us to challenge them in Monster Hunter Wilds

Following the viewing of the presentation and the Sony State of Play trailer, my excitement for the upcoming Xbox and PC titles has skyrocketed to unprecedented heights. The fresh monsters appear thrilling and enjoyable to battle, the new landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful, and we’re fortunate enough to witness some iconic monsters make a comeback with stunning next-gen graphics due to Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine technology.

If we see familiar creatures such as Yian Kut-Ku and Congalala returning in the game, I’m eagerly anticipating that some of the monsters from my Monster Hunter Wilds wishlist might also appear, including Tetsucabra, Zamtrios, or Yama Tsukami. Regardless, I can hardly contain my excitement for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28, 2024, as I look forward to teaming up with friends online and tracking down these exciting beasts together.

In a leap forward, Monster Hunter Wilds – the highly anticipated follow-up to one of Capcom’s top-tier Xbox and PC games, Monster Hunter World – is slated for release on February 28, 2025. This exhilarating adventure will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
