As a lifelong fan of Junji Ito’s horrifyingly brilliant works, I can confidently say that the long-awaited anime adaptation of “Uzumaki” has finally arrived, and it’s everything we’ve been waiting for! Having followed Ito’s career since his early days, I can attest to the fact that adaptations of his manga have often fallen short, but with Adult Swim and Production I.G. at the helm, this series promises to be an exception to the rule.
The iconic horror manga masterpiece, “Uzumaki“, has finally stepped onto the anime stage, marking the moment for us to prepare for its upcoming series. Known as one of the most influential manga artists of today, Junji Ito’s horror stories have left a lasting impact on fans. The eerie visuals and otherworldly creatures in his works have remained popular since their initial release. However, adapting these manga tales into animation has been challenging in the past.
I can hardly contain my excitement as a dedicated fan! The long-awaited TV adaptation of Uzumaki by Production I.G. and Adult Swim is finally coming to fruition with its full premiere this month. After nearly half a decade in development, the fruits of their labor are finally being unveiled for our viewing pleasure.
How to Watch Uzumaki
To watch the limited four-episode series of “Uzumaki”, it’s set to air through October 20th. You can find new episodes every Saturday at 12:30AM EST on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block. If you miss the initial airing, don’t worry! The English dub encore will be shown on Thursdays starting from October 3rd, also at 12:30AM EST. Additionally, episodes will be available to stream on Max the following day after their premiere. So, fans can catch up regardless of whether they were able to watch it during its initial broadcast.
You’ll surely want to watch the series, too, since the team at Production I.G has been diligently working on bringing Ito’s renowned work to life on screen. As Jason DeMarco, Adult Swim’s SVP of anime and action series, explained during development, their goal was to create something as unsettling as Ito-sensei often does in his works but hadn’t been achieved in previous animated adaptations.
Why You Should Watch Uzumaki
In Nagahama’s proposal, they intended to employ motion capture technology and create everything digitally first. Afterward, they planned to redraw each piece meticulously, believing this approach would enable the animators to handle Ito-sensei’s intricate line work effectively. DeMarco added that the choice to produce the show in black and white initially posed significant production challenges, but it ultimately resulted in a visually stunning final product.
As a gamer, let me tell you, the pandemic has been an unforeseen roadblock in bringing this game to life. It practically halted the entire project for almost a year, making it the biggest hurdle we’ve faced. Our team was small, and even just a handful of us or our family members getting sick was devastating not only for the production but also for our team spirit. Reviving the project under such circumstances has been quite the challenge.
