Across the cosmos, the Green Lantern Corps have left their mark on countless inhabited planets within a hundred light-years of Oa. They’re accustomed to exploring the strangest, most chaotic cities in every galaxy, and their home worlds are no different. Given that Mogo is a sentient planet, their adventures with him are always unpredictable. Yet, the Green Lanterns have just touched down on a planet that might be the most intriguing and unsettling in all of the DC Universe. This planet goes by the name Necropia, which is essentially a city constructed within the corpse of a deceased Starro, and it hosts some of the most despicable and seedy activities that the Green Lanterns have ever encountered.
What is Necropia?
Initially, Necropia made its debut in issue #4 of Green Lantern Corps. Characters Green Lantern Simon Baz, Teen Lantern Keli Quintela, and construct Ellie Stewart ventured to the ghostly metropolis when Keli required a fresh psionic battery. Initially, Keli aimed to break into Simon’s workshop in search of supplies; however, he only kept common Earth technology in his garage. Keen on forging a connection with the young Lantern bearing a power ring, Simon proposed that they journey to Necropia to find what she needed. With this, they climbed into Simon’s construct vehicle and soared through space, en route to Necropia.
Simon presented the girls with Necropia, a colossal dead Starro teeming with dwellings and businesses spread across its decaying monstrous tissue. As per Simon, it not only houses some of the most disreputable merchants and clandestine traders in the cosmos but also serves up the finest fusion cuisine this part of the Vega System has to offer – a true praise given the rarity of such gastronomic delights. Meanwhile, Ellie remained in the vehicle to allow the two Lanterns an opportunity to connect, while Simon and Keli made their way to Enzo’s Equipment Emporium, a questionable weapons vendor managed by a dinosaur-like extraterrestrial who harbors animosity towards the Corps. Simultaneously, Guy Gardner and his fresh apprentice Narf ventured into the city to provide the timid Green Lantern with essential hands-on training.
As a movie enthusiast, I can tell you that we don’t get a comprehensive look at the inside of Necropia, but from what we do catch, it resembles an enormous starfish-shaped shopping mall on Earth. At its heart is a massive eyeball, which serves as the central location. Inside this colossal Starro, there are shops, parking lots, bars, and even modern plumbing. Guy and Narf were propelled through multiple levels of Necropia by Evil Star’s Quantum Destabilizer, giving us glimpses of these features. Given the fact that Necropia was run by a villain like Evil Star and the Green Lanterns’ visit didn’t seem to bring about any good, it’s safe to say that this place is far from innocent.
Necropia Promises to Make the Lanterns Join the Dead
Simon and Keli went to see Enzo in search of a psionic battery, but when they tried to force him to cooperate, Enzo retaliated with a device that made them fall into a trance, reliving their worst memories. Ellie entered Simon’s mind to help guide him to Keli’s, so they could escape. However, in the process, they stumbled upon a shocking truth about Teen Lantern’s gauntlet – it has a different origin story than she’s shared before, and Iorl, the dying Green Lantern, told her to destroy it at all costs. Meanwhile, trapped within their own minds, Enzo tried to remove the gauntlet for sale on the Obsidian Market. Failing with his tools, he contacted his boss, Evil Star, to borrow the Quantum Destabilizer.
Simon and Keli sought a psionic battery from Enzo, but when they aggressively demanded cooperation, Enzo defended himself by putting them into a trance, causing them to relive their worst memories. Ellie navigated through Simon’s mind to assist him in reaching Keli’s, allowing them to escape. In the process, they discovered that Teen Lantern’s gauntlet had a previously unknown origin story, with Iorl instructing her to destroy it. While trapped within their minds, Enzo attempted to take the gauntlet for sale on the Obsidian Market. Unable to do so with his tools, he contacted Evil Star to borrow the Quantum Destabilizer.
Indeed, Evil Star had his hands full following the incident where he hurled Guy and Narf through multiple levels of Necropia using the specified artifact, successfully breaching Guy Gardner’s protective barrier. Anything that can induce such a painful reaction from Guy is something to be wary of, especially if you’re Narf and this was meant to be a routine operation. The Lantern teams seem destined for a collision, provided they survive the chaos in this perilous urban landscape. One truth remains: Necropia demands further exploration – it’s just too captivating not to revisit!
