As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for antiheroes and strong female leads, I can’t help but be thrilled about the new solo series of Laura Kinney, aka X-23, titled “Laura Kinney: Wolverine.” Having grown up watching Logan’s journey and witnessing the evolution of his clone, it’s a delight to see her stepping into the spotlight.
Dafne Keen reappeared as the clone of Logan, Laura Kinney, in the series Deadpool & Wolverine, and her role is set to expand even more prominently in the comics. After a hiatus from the big screen since 2017’s Logan, Laura made a surprising appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Given her skyrocketing popularity, Marvel is now launching a new series for Laura Kinney: Wolverine during the X-Men: From the Ashes era. In this solo series, Laura will be on a mission to rescue mutants who are being compelled to use their powers against their will.
In a new development, Marvel has unveiled a sneak peek at “Laura Kinney: Wolverine” #1, penned by Erica Schultz, Giada Belviso, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC’s Cory Petit. The story begins with Wolverine hanging from the side of a towering building in Dubai, engaged in a rescue operation. A few days prior, we find ourselves walking with Laura Kinney (Wolverine), Sophie Cuckoo, and Kamala Khan on a city street. It seems that Sophie and Kamala are adjusting more smoothly to life beyond Krakoa compared to Laura. The trio then visit the Treehouse, formerly the X-Men’s base in New York City, now transformed into a memorial for mutants who have gone missing or perished.
In the scene, a three-person group stumbles upon a mutant named Emery. Sophie manages to scare him away using telepathy. Later, Sophie and Kamala depart to find something to eat, leaving Laura behind. While they’re gone, Laura discovers a note left by Emery – the mutant they had recently met. The note contained a picture of his sibling Ivan. It appears that Ivan and Emery were taken from their home in Moldova and ended up in Dubai. Emery doesn’t possess any special abilities, but Ivan can manipulate emotions. Since he was considered more valuable, the kidnappers took Ivan, and Emery seeks help to locate him. This is why Laura was present at the start of the preview.
According to writer Erica Schultz, the upcoming Laura Kinney: Wolverine series will feature both brand-new and familiar villains. The dissolution of Krakoa has left mutants divided not only geographically but also ideologically. As Laura Kinney was trained in the Facility, she carries a certain skepticism with her. However, despite the grim outlook, she’ll encounter new lessons and skills, and discover that there are still decent individuals to be found. The story will reflect real life by offering a range of diverse experiences for Laura, ultimately leading to personal growth.
Schultz hinted at what audiences can look forward to in Laura’s upcoming series, saying, “There will be unforeseen partnerships. Laura is going to discover more about herself and realize she’s not as isolated in this world as she believed earlier on. She’s not the only one who was trained as an assassin at a young age and forced to carry out actions against her will…and perhaps she’ll come to this realization through a couple of partnerships. However, you’ll need to read the book to uncover the details!
Here’s a sneak peek at the first issue of “Laura Kinney: Wolverine,” which hits the shelves on Wednesday, 11th December.
