The idea for a movie version of the visually stunning Shadow of the Colossus emerged in 2010. After multiple changes in creative direction, director Andrés Muschietti was brought on board in 2014. Over a decade has passed since then, and Muschietti recently confirmed that the project is still moving forward.
On the Radio TU show La Baulere del Coso, Muschietti clarifies that the big-screen adaptation of Team Ico’s work is far from being an abandoned project. He acknowledges his limited gaming experience but considers Shadow of the Colossus a masterpiece, which he has played multiple times. The director then shares that a script for the movie has been prepared, and after 10 years in development, the opportunity to bring it to life is becoming more feasible.
Once again, funding continues to be a challenge. Director Muschietti points out that producing a movie based on an obscure intellectual property can be tough. He elaborates: “Shadow of the Colossus is a beloved game, but a studio evaluates its potential box office return and sets a price tag for the film. They might offer $200 million, $150 million, or even $100 million to the director. There are various iterations of the movie, and while I’d prefer a budget of $200 million, other factors must be taken into account.
