A Different World: Seminal Sitcom Getting Sequel Series at Netflix

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the rich narratives of TV shows and games alike, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news of “A Different World” getting a sequel series on Netflix. This show was more than just a spin-off; it was a cultural phenomenon that not only entertained millions but also inspired generations to seek higher education at HBCUs.

The hit TV show A Different World is slated to have a sequel in the works at Netflix. The new project is being led by writer and executive producer Felicia Pride, who has previously worked on shows like Bel-Air and Grey’s Anatomy. Additionally, it appears that original series veterans Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood are all set to be involved in the project as well. Notably, Debbie Allen, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood are returning to their respective roles as director/producer (Allen), writers (Prince-Bythewood, Bythewood), and executive producer (Werner) from the original series.

In the initial storyline of A Different World, Denise Huxtable (played by Lisa Bonet) departs from her home on The Cosby Show to attend Hillman College, a made-up Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Here, she shares a dorm room with the sole white student, Marisa Tomei’s character. However, this setup lasted for just one season as Bonet got pregnant (with Zoe Kravitz) and Bill Cosby decided to remove Denise from the series by having her leave Hillman College.

As a devoted fan, I can share that A Different World underwent a creative overhaul, with Allen taking the helm as chief creator. The focus shifted towards offering a more authentic portrayal of life at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Iconic stars such as Jada Pinkett Smith joined the cast, while characters like Tomei’s were phased out. Instead, Whitley Gilbert, played by Jasmine Guy, and Dwayne Wayne, portrayed by Kadeem Hardison, emerged as the main protagonists. The series concluded with a heartwarming twist: after years of unrequited feelings, Dwayne and Whitley confessed their love for each other and got married. An unexpected turn came when Dwayne moved to Tokyo to develop an educational video game, taking his pregnant wife, Whitley, along on this exciting journey.

Based on reports, the follow-up series is expected to feature the grown-up daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, as she starts her college journey at Hillman College. It’s been mentioned that discussions have occurred with the original cast members about their interest and availability, and so far, the feedback has been favorable.

Under Allen’s leadership, “A Different World” transformed from a spinoff into a culturally significant show, boosting HBCU enrollment by over 25%. Airing between 1987-1992, the series spanned six seasons and played a crucial role in securing NBC’s Thursday night prime-time programming block, which became their key programming asset for the following decade. This block was strategically placed, with “The Cosby Show” and “Cheers” on either side.

Due to legal complications involving Cosby, the follow-up series for “A Different World” has been put on hold. However, in the interim, the cast and creators have organized a reunion tour called “A Different World: HBCU College Tour 2024”. This tour kicked off this spring, with original cast member Kim Cole presiding over a discussion featuring stars such as Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, Glynn Turman, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl Bell, and Charnele Brown. Also participating were Debbie Allen, Karen Malina White, Tempestt Bledsoe, and Sinbad. The fall tour dates are still open for booking.
