A Divisive Power Rangers Movie is Hitting Netflix Soon

Fans of Power Rangers are currently in a state of anticipation, waiting to learn about the franchise’s future on the big screen, as there are reportedly plans being developed at Paramount. However, as more details are yet to be revealed, not much progress seems to be happening in that area. But, fans don’t have to wait too long as a Power Rangers movie is set to arrive on Netflix in about a week from now – March 6th to be precise. So, mark your calendars and get ready to revisit the 2017 Power Rangers reboot on Netflix, where you can determine if your opinion towards the film has shifted since your last viewing.

2017’s reboot was expected to mark a fresh beginning for the series, but despite initial excitement, it struggled to gain momentum at the box office. With a production cost of $100 million, the Power Rangers movie managed to earn only $85,264,450 domestically and $56,972,240 internationally. In total, it grossed $142,337,240 worldwide, falling short of creating a box office sensation.

The movie sparked differing opinions among viewers, too. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a 51% rating from critics but a more favorable 65% score from fans on Popcornmeter. Amy Jo Johnson and Jason David Frank made brief appearances in the film, and there was a hint of Green Ranger’s introduction for the proposed sequel, though this never came to pass.

I found the movie quite enjoyable overall, despite some flaws, particularly concerning its narrative flow and handling of the villains. However, the portrayal of the Rangers themselves was exceptional. The cast Lionsgate gathered for this production is truly stellar, with Elizabeth Banks taking on the role of the villain – a move that should have been a winning combination. Regrettably, certain decisions hindered its potential to become the blockbuster hit the franchise anticipated, ultimately leading to a significant shift in the franchise’s strategy aimed at linking movies and TV shows.

It turns out that those plans (related to Netflix) for the franchise have been abandoned, leaving us focused on Paramount’s new direction. This seems to be a full reboot of the series. As we eagerly anticipate updates about this reboot, it’s interesting to reflect on the possibility of a sequel to the 2017 reboot that was once considered. In an interview with TV Insider, RJ Cyler, who played the Blue Ranger, shared ideas for what he’d like to see in a sequel, highlighting certain elements and characters he believed deserved more attention.

Cyler expressed his eagerness to witness Jason’s progression in his relationship with his father, drawing a comparison to Mufasa and Simba from The Lion King. He’s interested in exploring the depth of their reconciliation and understanding, as they showed signs of softening in the previous movie, but he wants to delve deeper into how their bond evolves. Additionally, Cyler is excited about seeing more development for the character Trini, as there were hints of her potential ties to the LGBT community in the original film. He’s hoping to see a deeper exploration and growth of this aspect of her character, which could inspire fans and bring about change in their lives.

Additionally, Billy could potentially be a superhero with autism, as Cyler shared after attending Power Morphicon. He expressed, ‘I’ve never experienced such warmth from so many people. Each person I spoke to, whether or not they were on the spectrum, found some connection with Billy. I want to keep fostering that connection. I want to help individuals feel at ease and discover common ground. It allows them the mental freedom to pursue their dreams.’
