A Fan-Favorite Buffy Character Almost Joined Firefly’s Cast (Yes, Really)

Although Firefly ran for just a single season, its popularity has endured for 20 years since its abrupt conclusion. Thanks to behind-the-scenes discussions, we’ve continued to discover fascinating details about the show. One of the most recent disclosures is that a character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to join the cast, but this never materialized due to Firefly being canceled by FOX. Contemplating the potential impact on the series if this addition had occurred makes one wonder about the possibilities that might have unfolded in season 2.

Through a TikTok video posted by user the_electric_crow, James Marsters disclosed that Buffy’s beloved character Spike had originally been intended for the Firefly series cast. Joss Whedon arranged a meeting between Marsters and the rest of the Firefly team, although at the time Marsters didn’t grasp why he was being introduced to them. However, it was later revealed that the intention was for Spike to cross paths with the team during their journeys, eventually joining the crew, and even a scene depicting his introduction had been prepared.

If #Fox hadn’t ended the series, #Spike would have been part of the #Firefly crew, as portrayed by #JamesMarsters under the direction of #JossWhedon. The story continues in #Serenity and features other notable cast members like #NathanFillion. This character is also known for his role as a vampire in #BuffytheVampireSlayer. #fyp

Originally, the intention was to incorporate Spike into Joss’ television series set in space, known as Firefly. However, it seemed odd to him that they didn’t simply stick with one name for the show. As he stepped onto the set of Serenity (which is Firefly), he found the space-themed environment intriguing. He was introduced to the cast members and was impressed by their friendliness and warmth. Marsters remarked about this experience.

Marsters mentioned that he wasn’t aware of the reason for the introduction, but it seemed that the plan was to have them enter a bar, where a vampire would be present, expressing “Nothing ever changes. It never changes.” Since Spike is immortal and thus from the future, he was intended to join the cast, but unfortunately, the show got cancelled.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but imagine how brilliantly Spike would have blended the intergalactic adventures of Firefly with the supernatural world of Buffy. Initially, the collision of these contrasting universes might have seemed disconcerting, but I believe Spike would have swiftly adjusted and endeared himself to viewers just as he did in Buffy. Sadly, the opportunity for this crossover never materialized, which is a real pity because it could have not only captivated fans but also boosted ratings at the time.

Buffy’s Revival

Interestingly enough, this development coincides with Buffy the Vampire Slayer making a comeback, welcoming back several of its original cast members. As for Joss Whedon’s popular character, Spike, portrayed by James Marsters, there’s no confirmation yet about his return. However, he has spoken out regarding the revival and the talented crew steering it forward.

According to what I’ve been clearly informed, I am advised to keep quiet. However, this is not a suggestion that you should follow my example. It’s just that we are making great efforts… [Marsters then corrects his pronoun usage] Let me clarify: The individuals working behind the camera are some of the finest in Hollywood. Chloe Zhao, who is directing the pilot, has directed Nomadland and is skilled at creating intimate character-driven dramas. Moreover, she has even directed a Marvel film! She is highly esteemed among Hollywood directors. This is what Marsters told Nerdist.

The resurgence is being planned at Hulu right now, though they haven’t announced a specific start date for filming or release yet. On the other hand, if you’re a Firefly fan, you can find an eye-catching Steelbook version of Serenity that showcases all the previously released features in stunning 4K Blu-ray quality, but there are no new special features included.
