A Fan Favorite Green Lantern is Back, But Why Are They in Hell?

So far, the ongoing run of Green Lantern comics has been a delight for fans of the power-driven Corps, as it’s filled with popular characters from various eras in Green Lantern’s history and introduces new challenges. Recently, Hal Jordan and his team have been engaged in a fierce battle against Hal’s longstanding adversary, Hector Hammond, who has taken control over his D.E.O. colleagues. The lead Green Lantern and his companions have been facing one threat after another, but Hal has now pinpointed the source of their problems: it’s none other than hell itself! That’s right, Hal intends to travel there as part of his strategy to halt the onslaught of enemies.

In the latest comic issue #22, I found myself, along with Hal, the Phantom Stranger, and Zauriel, stepping through the eerie portal within St. Patrick’s Purgatory, an old Irish church, into the very heart of hell. The air was thick with dread as we ventured deeper, but the Phantom Stranger’s unease turned out to be justified when a familiar voice echoed from the shadows. Stepping forth from the darkness, clad in his Lantern gear and wielding a flickering torch, was none other than fan-favorite Green Lantern G’nort. His eyes sparkled with joy at the sight of us, for he confessed that it had been ages since he encountered any friendly faces.

Who is G’nort?

G’nort, guardian of Sector 68, is a part of the Green Lantern group that is well-liked by fans. He isn’t renowned for any remarkable feats like Kilwog, nor does he have an exceptional and distinctive personality like Sojourner Mullein, or for frequently switching sides like Sinestro. Instead, G’nort is remembered as potentially the least effective Green Lantern across the entire team. This stands out, given they have one member who essentially functions as a sentient squirrel.

Generally, Green Lanterns are picked by their rings based on strong will, a sense of justice, and fear-conquering abilities. However, G’nort got his ring from his uncle G’newman who was also a Green Lantern. This isn’t just nepotism; it turns out that the rings of both G’nort and G’newman were given by the Weaponers of Qward disguised as the Guardians of the Universe. They recruited the two in an underhanded attempt to undermine the Green Lantern Corps, showcasing their apparent incompetence.

G’nort is most recognized for his unreliable blunders. More times than not, his attempts to help only complicate matters further, transforming a simple issue such as a cat trapped in a tree into both the cat and G’nort being stuck in the same tree. In spite of his limited skills, G’nort remains unwaveringly loyal, which is understandable considering his species, the G’newtians, are dog-like beings with human intelligence. Though he may not be physically or intellectually powerful, his intentions are good, and when he recalls how, he can use his ring to focus his determination.

Why is G’nort in Hell?

To put it simply, we’re still not sure why G’nort seems to be in a place like hell. Despite his incompetence, G’nort is a character known for his heroic acts. Initially, he was a temporary member of the Justice League International, and managed to join only after persistently bothering them. However, following the Flashpoint event, the DC Universe timeline was reset, and G’nort hasn’t been seen much in comics since then. He’s made sporadic appearances in Green Lantern comics and played secondary roles in The Human Target series and the questionable canonicity of G’nort’s Swimsuit Edition. However, there is no indication in any of these instances that G’nort has died or deserves to be in a place like hell.

It’s quite plausible that the recent storyline of Green Lantern revolving around the Emotional Spectrum has led our character to some new spiritual abode. If this is the case, it might hint at the appearance of deceased Green Lanterns like Kilowog. On the other hand, it’s equally possible that G’nort has somehow found himself in a predicament and can’t escape. Regardless, we’ll have to wait for the upcoming issues to find out how G’nort will influence or complicate matters for Hal Jordan and his team. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the charming oaf that is G’nort back in action!
