A Full-Length Bluey Movie Is Officially on the Way

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the rise and fall of blockbuster franchises to the emergence of groundbreaking independent films. But none have captured my heart quite like the delightful world of Bluey. Having grown up in Australia, I can truly appreciate the charm and warmth that this series brings to the table.

The much-adored character from “Bluey,” the highly successful Australian animated series produced by Ludo Studio, is set to make its big screen debut. With three seasons under its belt and an impressive following worldwide, it’s clear that this show has made a significant impact. A special extended episode released earlier this year, titled “The Sign,” was met with rave reviews and is widely regarded as one of the series’ best episodes. This 28-minute adventure sparked speculation about a potential movie, and now, it seems those rumors were true! The production of a full-length feature film based on “Bluey” is now in high gear.

Disney and BBC revealed on Monday morning that a Bluey movie has been greenlit for production. The series creator, Joe Brumm, will be back at the helm for both directing and scriptwriting duties for this cinematic adventure set to hit global theaters in 2027. Although an exact release date within that year is still undisclosed.

In a recent press statement, I expressed my delight in delving deeper into the longer format of ‘The Sign’ during Series 3, and taking it a step further into a feature film feels like a seamless progression for me. For quite some time, I’ve felt that Bluey would thrive on the grand stage of a theatrical movie. My ambition is to create an immersive cinematic experience that the entire family can savor together. I am thrilled about the opportunity to collaborate once more with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell, and the team at BBC Studios, as well as Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, and Disney, in bringing this fresh Bluey tale to life on the big screen.

Amber Naismith, who’s known for her work on “Happy Feet” and “The Lego Movie”, is set to produce the CG animated “Bluey” film. The director of the “Bluey” series, Richard Jeffery, will serve as co-director alongside her. Additionally, Brumm has been announced as an executive producer for this project.

Ever since it first appeared on Disney Jr. and Disney+, the show ‘Bluey’ has exploded in popularity around the world, bringing families together with its touching tales about play, creativity, and bonding,” shared Disney Entertainment co-heads Alan Bergman and Dana Walden. “We are thrilled to build upon our partnership with BBC Studios by taking the charm of ‘Bluey’ to movie theaters – for a true-to-life experience! – and we owe a debt of gratitude to Joe Brumm for crafting a universe that keeps captivating and delighting families everywhere.

We’re thrilled to bring ‘Bluey’ to movie theaters, given its unprecedented popularity worldwide – it’s one of the most beloved intellectual properties on earth. It’s been a true honor collaborating with Joe and his team at Ludo as they guided ‘Bluey’ from its early beginnings to becoming one of the most cherished TV shows ever made,” commented BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell. “BBC Studios has a rich history of sharing exceptional children’s television content globally, so working with Joe and his team, we felt that a feature-length film was the logical next step. We are delighted to work with Disney on ‘Bluey’s highly anticipated cinematic premiere and look forward to joining forces with Dana, Alan, and the entire crew for this significant adventure.

For eight years, we’ve been honored to collaborate with an exceptional group of over fifty artists and producers whose skills, devotion, and imagination have transformed Bluey into the cherished series it is today. Their efforts have opened up this fantastic chance to bring Bluey’s world to life on the big screen. We’re thrilled to continue demonstrating Queensland as a hub for top-tier talent and to share a fresh, enchanting Bluey tale by Joe Brumm with families worldwide.

Stay tuned for more details about the Bluey movie as they are revealed.
