As I delve deeper into the lives of this remarkable trio of women – Kamala Harris, Maya Harris, and Meena Harris – I am truly inspired by their resilience, determination, and accomplishments.
Kamala Harris has the opportunity to make history yet again in 2021. She took the vice presidency oath of office, making her the first female, first Black American, and first South Asian American to assume this esteemed role in US history.
Currently, Harris aspires to make history as the United States’ first female president. This ambition arose following Joe Biden’s announcement on July 21, 2024, that he would no longer seek reelection, with him pledging his backing and endorsement for Harris as the Democratic nominee. Facing off against Donald Trump as the Republican candidate, Harris has previously left her mark in various milestones during her career. In 2004, she made history by being elected District Attorney of San Francisco, becoming the first woman, Black woman, and South Asian American to hold that position. Six years later, Harris broke new ground again as California’s first female, Black American, and South Asian American Attorney General. Lastly, in 2017, she became the second Black woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
To her loved ones, Kamala Harris holds various roles: daughter of Donald J. Harris and the late Shyamala Gopalan, sister to Maya Harris, aunt to Meena Harris, spouse to Doug Emhoff, and “Momala” to Cole and Ella Emhoff.
She shared with People magazine in 2023, “I deeply cherish being called Momala. The title holds a more prevalent meaning than we often discuss – co-parenting. It’s not just about being a stepparent but actively contributing to raising a child whose love is equally mine. The kids bestowed this name upon me, and I proudly embrace it.”
To learn more about Harris’ family, keep reading.
I was born in southern India in 1938, and Donald J. Harris was born in Jamaica that very same year. According to The New York Times, we crossed paths in 1962 while pursuing our Ph.D.s at the University of California, Berkeley, and as active members of the Afro American Association. We exchanged vows the following year and went on to welcome daughters Kamala Harris in 1964 and Maya Harris in 1967.
Growing up in Brooklyn and Matawan, New Jersey, I’m Doug Emhoff, born in 1964. As a teenager, my family moved to Los Angeles. I earned my B.A. in communications from California State University, Northridge in 1987, and three years later, I graduated with a J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.
Cole Emhoff, born in 1994, will never forget when he was first introduced to Harris.
“I met her and we had this amazing dinner,” Emhoff’s eldest, who was a senior in high school at the time of their meeting, recalled to Glamour in 2020. “And I realized like, Oh, my God, Doug has met someone who is completely unique and totally special. I think for all of us, it was love at first sight.”
Cole graduated from Colorado College in 2017. According to People, citing his now-private LinkedIn profile, he has worked for Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B and is married to Greenley Littlejohn, with Harris officiating their wedding in 2023.
Ella Emhoff, born in 1999 and named after Ella Fitzgerald, shares fond memories of their initial encounter with Harris. In an interview with Glamour, she recalled, “It seemed as though we had been friends for ages. What mattered most was discovering her as a person before recognizing her as a politician.”
Among those closest to Harris is her younger sister, Maya Harris.
“We leaned on each other,” the 49th Vice President told The Washington Post in 2019. “We forged a bond that is unbreakable. When I think about it, all of the joyous moments in our lives, all of the challenging moments, all of the moments of transition, we have always been together.”
As her bio notes, Maya served as a campaign chairperson during Harris’ 2020 presidential run and later championed her run for VP alongside President Joe Biden. Previously, she worked as a senior policy advisor to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential campaign.
Born in 1967, Maya graduated from University of California, Berkeley and then received her law degree from Stanford Law School. Her résumé includes leadership positions at the Ford Foundation and ACLU of Northern California, a senior fellow role at the Center for American Progress, a visiting scholar apppointment at Harvard Law School and author contribution to The Covenant with Black America.
Maya is married to Tony West, former Associate Attorney General and current Chief Legal Officer at Uber, and is mom to daughter Meena Harris.
Born in 1984, Meena Harris is the niece of Harris. Raised in the United States, she earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and went on to attend Harvard Law School. Apart from practicing law, she has worked for tech companies such as Facebook, Slack, and Uber.
