A Justice League Hero Just Crossed Over to DC’s Absolute Universe

In his own series once again, Aquaman faces perilous times as the ruler of the underwater realm. After a challenging few years following the end of his previous storyline, attempts were made to broaden the Aqua mythology by turning the new Aqualad into another Aquaman and relegating Arthur to the Justice League without providing him with a solo book. However, DC’s All-In initiative has revitalized many classic DC characters, and Aquaman #1 marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the monarch of Atlantis.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over the mind-blowing twist at the end of “Absolute Power”. Some familiar faces, including Aquaman himself, experienced a shift in their powers, with our hero now wielding Mera’s hydrokinesis! This fresh start for Aquaman unfolds in his new series, where he’s grappling with these novel abilities. However, during a fierce confrontation with an enigmatic water beast, Aquaman is urgently summoned back to Atlantis. In a heartbeat, I’m off, racing towards my underwater home, only to find it utterly devastated. The only trace left behind is a mysterious pearl, the same one discovered earlier in the issue by Jackson Hyde.

The Pearl Is the Key to Another World

It appears that the pearl might hold the secret behind Atlantis’s vanishing. Previously, an asterisk indicated that this pearl should be recognizable to readers who have followed Flashpoint Beyond #1, The Flash #785, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18. These stories seem to carry implications across different universes. Aquaman delivers the pearl to the Justice League’s Watchtower, where Zatanna employs her magical abilities to unravel the enigmas surrounding the pearl.

Zatanna discloses that the item is incredibly potent. Despite her familiarity with magic, she has a feeling she should recognize it, but something has concealed its presence from the weaves of enchantment, possibly even prior to time’s inception. However, she can sense a connection to it, and Aquaman, Batman, and Wonder Woman embark on an underwater journey to a secret gateway. Aquaman then launches a pearl which penetrates the gate, with Aquaman himself passing through afterwards. Upon his departure, the gate metamorphoses into an omega from the Greek alphabet – a symbol associated with Darkseid. This transformation can only imply one thing: Atlantis and now Aquaman have been drawn into the Realm of the Absolute.

What Is DC’s Absolute Universe?

In recent times, the Universe Absolute has become one of DC Comics’ most successful creations. Its conception originated from the final installments of the “Absolute Power” series and the special issue, “DC All-In #1.” This issue depicts Darkseid amassing unprecedented power by seizing the abilities of the Spectre and engaging in a fierce battle with the Justice League which ultimately led to his apparent demise. However, this death was later unveiled as a false lead, as instead, Darkseid found himself on a Earth he could reforge according to his own malevolent design. This event marked the beginning of the Universe Absolute, and the popular series like “Absolute Batman,” “Absolute Superman,” and “Absolute Wonder Woman.” This universe is shaped by Darkseid’s wickedness, making it an entirely unique Earth within the DC Multiverse.

The pearl belonging to Aquaman appears to function as a link between the primary DC universe and the Absolute Universe, similar to orbs previously encountered by DC’s heroes. Zatanna’s comment about it being altered at the dawn of time, outside the weave of magic, could suggest its creation by Darkseid. Since Darkseid molded the original Earth, this could imply that he began at the origin of time, moving backward, and crafted the pearl as a means to pilfer fragments from other universes for his own purposes. As Darkseid is not renowned for his creative skills, this might provide an explanation for how he shaped much of his Earth. This also implies that Aquaman and Atlantis could be situated anywhere along the timeline of the Absolute Universe.

Aquaman Is In for the Fight of His Life

The first issue starts off with Aquaman declaring that this isn’t about Aquaman the king, but rather Aquaman the slayer of gods. This sets up an intriguing path as he ventures into the Realm of Infinity. Although Aquaman won’t be killing Darkseid in this storyline, his mission to save Atlantis will undoubtedly bring him face-to-face with formidable adversaries. Previously, readers have witnessed Aquaman fight against Poseidon and Triton, and this new series could see him engaged in combat with the malevolent deity that Darkseid has appointed over the seas. Aquaman’s exploration of the Realm of Infinity will test him like never before.

Aquaman #1 is on sale now.
