As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film history under my belt, I must say that the casting changes in Elf were as intriguing as the plot itself! It’s fascinating to learn that Wanda Sykes was originally slated to play the Gimbels manager, Wanda. While Faizon Love certainly brought his own brand of humor to the role, I can’t help but wonder how things would have turned out if Sykes had stuck around.
Since its release in 2003, the beloved Christmas movie “Elf” has become a staple in many homes. The story revolves around Buddy the Elf, a human raised by elves at the North Pole who sets out to find his real father, Water Hobbs, in New York City. It’s rare to get through the holiday season without catching phrases from this film being repeated frequently, and its popularity during this time is hardly unexpected due to its hilarious humor. Interestingly, there was a last-minute change in casting that made a significant difference in the final product.
Among the standout characters in the film, there’s Wanda, the humorous Gimbels manager portrayed brilliantly by Fazion Love. Although it might be tough to envision anyone else in that part now, the role of the toy store employee was initially intended for another actor and comedian who shares the character’s name. This movie is a must-watch for Christmas enthusiasts!
Wanda Sykes Was Originally Set to Play The Gimbles Manager
Initially, comedian and actress Wanda Sykes was set to take on the manager role at Gimbles in Elf. Although her character’s name wasn’t mentioned in the movie, her nametag read “Wanda.” However, unexpectedly, Wanda Sykes withdrew from the film just before production began, without disclosing any specific reasons.
Instead of Faizon Love, they cast him for the part, and he chose to honor the legendary comedian by keeping the name tag. Although Wanda Sykes might have made the set erupt with laughter (or more appropriately, a LEGO skyscraper), it’s heartening to see that they paid tribute to her original role in a subtle yet smart manner.
Several Industry Legends Were Considered For Roles Too
It’s worth noting that initially visualizing this film without its famous cast might be challenging. In fact, during the early stages of production in 1993, both Jim Carrey and Chris Farley were considered for the role of the beloved character Buddy the Elf. However, as the script underwent revisions, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell joined the writing team, altering the casting ultimately.
Initially, comedian Garry Shandling was given the chance to play the part of Buddy’s real-life dad, Walter Hobbs, in the movie, but he chose not to accept it. However, at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Shandling appeared alongside James Caan, who assumed the role of the father figure instead.
