A Minecraft Movie Has Made More Than $700 Million in the Worldwide Box Office

The “Minecraft Film” is currently enjoying a significant amount of success. As reported by IGN, this movie has surpassed $700 million at the global box office. This weekend will be its fourth consecutive week in cinemas.

During the past weekend, “A Minecraft Movie” brought in a whopping $41 million at the domestic box office. It raked in $16 million on Friday and an impressive $15.8 million on Saturday. On Sunday, it continued its success with $9.5 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo. In sum, “A Minecraft Movie” has earned over $343 million domestically, $374 million internationally, resulting in a grand total of over $717 million globally at the box office.

At present, “A Minecraft Movie” is lagging behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which currently holds the record for the highest-grossing film adapted from a video game franchise, with an impressive earnings of $1.3 billion during its theater run. Interestingly, “A Minecraft Movie” initially surpassed the opening box office results of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” earning $157 million in the domestic market, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” made $146 million during its first weekend.

To put things into perspective, it’s worth noting that in the year 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie emerged as the highest-grossing film. This blockbuster surpassed other notable releases such as Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (the animated version). It’s quite remarkable that this movie, initially budgeted at approximately $400 million, was co-funded by Nintendo and Universal, with half of the production cost being contributed equally by each.

It’s been confirmed that a follow-up to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is being developed! At this point, not much information has been shared yet. However, it’s expected to hit theaters around 2026. Back in October, voice actor Keegan-Michael Key (who plays Toad) hinted that the sequel will be larger in scale compared to its first installment.

Given the triumph of “A Minecraft Movie”, there’s a strong chance that discussions for a sequel could already be underway. Previously, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, has expressed interest in creating more movies and TV shows based on video games. In an interview, Spencer mentioned learning from past errors made during the Halo TV series development.

Spencer stated in March that as we continue this journey, we’re accumulating knowledge and self-assurance, leading us to believe we should take on more projects. Our experiences with ‘Halo’ and ‘Fallout’ have taught us valuable lessons, and each new endeavor builds upon the last. There will be some missteps along the way, but the Xbox community can expect more from us because we’re growing in confidence and experience.

Additionally, we’ve noticed an increase in popular adaptations gracing our small screens. For instance, HBO has launched the second season of their adaptation of The Last of Us, and Amazon’s adaptation of Fallout has also seen considerable success.
