A Minecraft Movie is “not the canonised version of Minecraft lore”, says director

In many instances, such as with video game adaptations like The Last of Us, crafting a script involves a relatively simple process of transformation: by transferring the narrative from the original game into a fresh format for television or film.

Contrarily, a Minecraft movie wouldn’t adhere to the same rules as the game because it’s the lack of a predefined narrative that contributes significantly to Minecraft’s worldwide success. Players themselves determine the events within the game’s universe.

When creating this movie, we needed to take on a mindset that saw each situation as an open door for possibilities, thinking something along the lines of, “Wow, there’s so much freedom in what we can achieve here!

He went on saying: “For my part, this location is perfect for a film with both epic action and absurdity. Much of existence can be foolish, yet terrifying too, especially when it gets very dark.

I immediately took a liking to the Piglins, since they were the main antagonists of the movie, being so unique. I’ve never encountered piglin barbarians who are gold-obsessed cannibals anywhere else, so it sparked an idea: ‘What if we craft a tale centered around them?’

In contrast to the game, the movie’s visual style deviates somewhat. The game is recognized for its minimalist, pixelated design, featuring everything as if built from blocks. While the film does incorporate this element to some extent, certain features were left open to creative interpretation according to Hess.

He clarified, using the creeper from the popular game as an illustration. “People might wonder if its skin is scaly and green like a reptile, or if it’s just covered in moss.

After discussing extensively with Mojang, we arrived at this point. Consequently, those who play it might notice it seems to be crafted from a completely distinct material.

That’s fantastic since we’re not confined to the official storyline of Minecraft, instead, we’re interpreting it all while maintaining the distinctive blocky appearance.
