Translating Phineas and Ferb: If I received a penny every time a Jack Black comedic tune from a video game film found its way onto the Billboard Hot 100, I’d have two pennies by now, which isn’t much, but it’s peculiar that it happened twice. Following “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Black has added another song to the Billboard Hot 100, and this time it’s the tune “Steve’s Lava Chicken” from A Minecraft Movie. The song debuted at number 78 on the charts for the week ending May 3rd.
Apart from gaining a spot on the Billboard Hot 100, Steve’s Lava Chicken song managed to break a record as well. With just 34 seconds of playtime, it is now officially the shortest song ever to chart in the history of Billboard. Previously,
In the movie titled “A Minecraft Film“, Jack Black’s character Steve sings an original tune called “Steve’s Lava Chicken” as he guides the rest of the human cast through the Overworld. A humorous and somewhat macabre scene unfolds when Steve demonstrates his unique culinary creation, a spicy dish formed by blending lava and chicken. This memorable moment has gained significant popularity due to the infectious quality of Jack Black’s tune. Notably, “Peaches” and “Steve’s Lava Chicken” are the only songs that Black has ever had on the Billboard Hot 100. It would have been great if he could have sung a song in “Borderlands” too!
Steve’s Lava Chicken’s impressive performance underscores the extraordinary box office success that ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has enjoyed since its recent premiere. Despite receiving unfavorable reviews from critics, this film has been raking in massive profits at the cinema. At present, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ stands as the second highest-grossing movie derived from a video game, with ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, featuring Black as the villainous Bowser, holding the top spot.
It’s quite surprising that “Steve’s Lava Chicken” has achieved such success, considering Jack Black made a full-length track especially for a Minecraft movie. Titled “I Feel Alive,” this tune is played during the end credits and is incredibly catchy, not to mention it includes several amusing nods to the Minecraft universe. In an unexpected twist, it appears that viewers found more appeal in the 34-second song created for a single scene!
