As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic universes, I must say that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe leaves me feeling more like a disheartened Kraven the Hunter than a victorious Spider-Man. The latest offering, ‘Kraven the Hunter’, while boasting an intriguing storyline in the comics, has failed to capture the hearts and minds of moviegoers, much like a well-laid trap that fails to ensnare its intended prey.
In the world of Sony’s Spider-Man tales, one of the adversaries has managed to gain the advantage over the web-slinger. The premiere of “Kraven the Hunter” sadly signifies the conclusion of Sony’s cinematic universe centered around Marvel characters… for now. The box office reception for “Kraven” has been quite disappointing, to put it mildly, leading Sony to temporarily halt further productions. To date, there have been three “Venom” films, “Morbius”, “Madame Web”, and “Kraven the Hunter”, with a primary focus on Spider-Man’s rogue gallery. Although not all of these have been box office successes, one of these villains recently emerged victorious in the comic books. BEWARE: The following content reveals spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #12. Proceed with caution!
In the 12th installment of “Ultimate Spider-Man,” the talented quartet of Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, Matthew Wilson, and VC’s Cory Petit take the reins. This issue is a festive tale set during Christmas, taking place at Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s apartment where a gathering occurs. Unforeseen attendees include Mary Jane’s Aunt Anna, mother Madeline, and sister Gayle, all given a contemporary refresh that some might find an improvement. The family dynamics conclude on a hopeful note; however, the aftermath of the issue’s final story featuring Kraven is less cheerful.
Kraven the Hunter captures Spider-Man and Green Goblin
In my humble opinion as a movie critic, the climax of “Ultimate Spider-Man” #12 leaves our beloved hero, Spider-Man, in quite a predicament alongside Green Goblin. The festive atmosphere at the party is abruptly disrupted when Mary Jane Watson receives a call from Gwen Stacy, frantic about her husband, Harry Osborn – he failed to appear at their holiday residence as planned. When Mary Jane inquires about Harry’s whereabouts with Peter Parker, the wall-crawler remains suspiciously tight-lipped. As the tension mounts, Peter turns his back to Mary Jane and fixates on their bedroom window, causing her concern.
Later on, we come across Peter Parker and Harry Osborn, their arms and wrists shackled overhead. Their arms bear deep cuts, and IV drips are attached too. Kraven’s exceptional hunting skills have ensnared Peter and Harry, who have cloth gags over their mouths and are dressed in their everyday attire. We learn from upcoming previews that “Kraven’s Most Dangerous Game!” in Ultimate Spider-Man #13 is being marketed as a tribute to “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” the influential 1987 Spider-Man storyline by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck. In this tale, Kraven takes on the role of the hunter, with Spider-Man and Green Goblin as his prey.
Ultimate Spider-Man is already better than Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
In the twisted realm known as the Ultimate Universe, Kraven the Hunter is part of Kingpin’s formidable group, the Sinister Six. This crew includes Mister Negative, Black Cat, Mysterio, and Mole Man, all working under the control of The Maker, a malevolent mastermind. Due to Spider-Man and Green Goblin causing disruptions in Kingpin’s criminal activities, he enlists the help of his Sinister Six to deal with this pesky vigilante issue. So far, Kraven has shown himself to be particularly challenging for Spider-Man, having already bested the original Black Cat.
The comic book series Ultimate Spider-Man, part of Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe, is garnering significant recognition, appearing on multiple year-end award lists such as ComicBook’s Golden Issue Award for Best Ongoing Comic. In contrast, the recent Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man films have not been as successful, with Mobius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter receiving mixed reviews on social media and at the box office respectively. Ultimate Spider-Man is expected to deliver more captivating narratives in 2025, while production for Spider-Man 4, by Sony Pictures, may be considered a victory, primarily because of Spider-Man’s association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than its own merit in battling adversaries like Venom or Kraven.
As a devoted moviegoer, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming clash between Spider-Man and Kraven the Hunter. It seems almost inevitable that our web-slinging hero will emerge victorious, but not without a cost. The Sinister Six loom in the background, and a rematch with Kingpin is on the horizon. However, it’s highly unlikely that Spidey will escape unscathed. His physical injuries may heal, but the emotional fallout from his relentless battles promises to be profound.
