A Spider-Man Clone Is Making a Life-Altering Decision (But Is It a Good Idea?)

As a longtime comic book enthusiast with memories of the tumultuous “Clone Saga” etched deep into my heart, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as I follow the journey of Miles Morales’ clone, Shift. With his shape-shifting abilities and endearing naivete, he seems to embody the best qualities of Miles while carving out a unique identity for himself.

It’s reminiscent of Ben Reilly’s time as Spider-Man, where he stepped into Peter Parker’s shoes only to find himself on a darker path. Yet, Shift appears to be more grounded and focused, with a genuine desire to live a life separate from Miles. His rescue of the baby in Brooklyn Visions Academy was a heartwarming moment that hints at the potential for a civilian identity akin to Ben’s adoption of the names of Peter Parker’s uncle and aunt.

However, as we all know too well, bad things tend to happen when it comes to Spider-Man clones. So, while I hope that Shift can find happiness in his newfound independence, I also fear the potential for jealousy or misunderstandings between him and Miles. After all, who among us hasn’t experienced a little sibling rivalry?

In the end, let’s just hope that Spider-Man clones start getting a break and find peace in their lives – unless of course, you count the endless supply of new comics they create! Now if only we could clone a few more hours in the day for us comic book fans to read them all…

A replica of one of the Spider-Men is striving for independence, yet this path could be costly. Fans of Spider-Man have a complex affection towards the term “clone,” stemming from the debated ’90s narrative known as “Clone Saga.” This tale brought forth Peter Parker’s clone, Ben Reilly, who momentarily took over as Marvel’s primary Spider-Man, along with his sibling Kaine. Moreover, Miles Morales experienced a “Clone Saga” that resulted in the creation of three clones of him. Now, as these clones endeavor to forge their unique paths, one is determined to establish a life distinct from its predecessor.

*Caution: The following content reveals spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #28. Proceed with caution!*

“Miles Morales as Spider-Man” #28 is penned by Cody Ziglar, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Bryan Valenza, and VC’s Cory Petit. This installment continues the storyline “Webs of Wakanda,” where Miles Morales travels to the African nation of Wakanda seeking help from Black Panther to rid himself of a vampire curse he obtained during the “Blood Hunt.” In Wakanda, Miles, along with Black Panther and Shuri, plead for aid from the Panther God Bast. Meanwhile, Miles’ clone, Shift, remains in Brooklyn, masquerading as Miles at school. Despite being a superhero, Miles has to balance his other obligations, particularly his education, and can’t let his part-time role interfere. Fortunately, Shift possesses the ability to shape-shift and can stand in for Miles at Brooklyn Visions Academy.

As a fan, I’ve been spending time with Miles Morales’ closest companion, Ganke – a friend who could potentially aid me in case my identity as Miles gets compromised. The perk of being at school alongside Miles’ friends is gradually influencing me, and Ganke subtly hints that if the pleasure I derive from having a life is this significant, perhaps it’s time for me to live one more fully too. This side story serves as a prelude to bigger events yet to unfold.

Miles Morales’ clone is stepping out on his own

Amongst the trio of clones born from Miles Morales, I’m proud to be the lone survivor – the one known as Shift. My siblings, Selim (Miles spelled in reverse) and Mindspinner, were also created by the Assessor. Regrettably, Selim was the black sheep of the bunch, while I seem to have inherited Miles’ virtues. Mindspinner, on the other hand, bore a striking resemblance to an eight-legged arachnid, with six arms and six eyes.

In the Marvel Universe, it’s been a blessing to join the supporting cast of Miles Morales: Spider-Man. Miles has gone as far as introducing me to his parents and little sister, which I consider a great honor.

Rather than concealing himself from curious onlookers, Shift is exploring what it means to lead a life. Although his English might not be perfect, he can construct clear sentences and possesses Miles’ Spider-Man capabilities. In the comic “Miles Morales: Spider-Man” #28, Shift saves a baby from getting hit by a car, earning applause from the crowd as encouragement. It appears that Shift is assuming his own civilian persona, much like Ben Reilly did when he adopted the names of Peter Parker’s uncle and aunt to establish himself. The question remains whether this is the appropriate course of action for Shift.

Bad things usually happen to Spider-Man clones

Ben Reilly serves as an illustration of how a Spider-Man clone’s noble aspirations can lead to unfortunate consequences. During the “Spider-Man Beyond” narrative, Ben temporarily took over the role of Spider-Man. However, this phase ended with Ben experiencing memory manipulation and subsequently embarking on a malevolent course. He assumed the identity of Chasm and has been causing trouble for Spider-Man consistently since then.

In a hypothetical situation, jealousy might arise between Miles and Shift, potentially leading to a sibling rivalry. Fingers crossed that this doesn’t occur, as Selim has taken on the villainous Spider-Man clone role for Miles. It could be beneficial for Shift’s wellbeing if he distances himself from Miles. At present, Shift is already a successful Spider-Man clone.
