- Activision shares patch notes for Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
- The update includes sweeping changes to weapon balancing.
- Changes are now live in both games.
As a tech-enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the recent patch notes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone have piqued my interest. Having played every CoD game since the original release, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolution of weapon balancing and its impact on the game’s meta.
In the games Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone, developers Treyarch and Raven Software have unveiled a significant overhaul to weapon adjustments, encompassing modifications to headshot damage and idle sway animations.
The changes are the result of gameplay data analysis and player feedback, and also include some visual glitches and bug fixes. The most notable section of the patch notes for Black Ops 6 and Warzone include the changes to weapon balance, which have the opportunity to sway the games’ Time-to-Kill and change up the community’s weapon meta.
Treyarch adjusted the movement of weapons in Black Ops 6 for a better balance, making what they referred to as a “thorough revision” of weapon motion. This was done by decreasing the sway across all Black Ops 6 weapons in both multiplayer and Warzone. The introduction of “Omnimovement” in Call of Duty brought about accuracy issues when combined with weapon sway. This update aims to minimize sway while players are aiming, moving, turning, changing stances, or shooting at opponents, which should result in a more steady gunplay experience.
The following changes were made to weapon motion:
- Reduced visual recoil on all weapons, especially full-auto weapons.
- Reduced turn sway on all weapons, especially on higher magnification optics.
- Reduced gun kick on higher magnification optics on all weapons except for Sniper Rifles.
- Reduced default idle sway on all weapons except Sniper Rifles.
- Further reduced idle sway while firing on all weapons except Sniper Rifles.
- Reduced weapon motion (bob, translation, and additional idle sway penalties) as a result of walking or changing stances in ADS.
- Removed additional layers of hip fire deviation, which caused crosshair to bounce while firing.
As an analyst, I’ve made some adjustments to the Aiming Idle Sway feature. Now, when transitioning into an ADS stance, there’s a delay that scales the weapon’s idle sway, ensuring a more accurate and consistent initial aim across all weapon classes. This delay is set at 2.2 seconds for all weapons, except for sniper rifles, where I’ve completely eliminated the aiming idle sway delay. However, if you opt for a Target Laser attachment, you can increase the Aiming Idle Sway Delay to 2.9 seconds on all weapons, enhancing your aim stability further.
Melee weapons weren’t left out of the new balance pass, as all three weapons now have improved swing times. Knives are improved by 7.5%, baseball bats improved 14%, and the power drill time to swing is buffed by 9.5%.
In the latest update, the weapon balance adjustment was merely a piece of the overall modifications. A reduction in the explosive radius damage for frag grenades enhanced the usefulness of the Flak Jacket perk, boosting the odds of surviving a grenade explosion when it’s equipped. Additionally, an issue with minimaps that kept teammates beyond the map’s maximum range from being shown on the edge was resolved, and a problem with the “Gentleman’s Handshake” finishing move preview in the store was improved as well.
Today’s update resolved an unusual visual glitch in Nuketown where players were emitting a bright green glow. Additionally, it corrected another issue that occurred when players swapped default attachments on a blueprint weapon; however, these changes weren’t reflected during matches, which has now been fixed as well.
In Warzone, updates were implemented not only for weapon balance but also for bug fixes particularly in the Top 250 Leaderboard of Ranked mode, a problem with the Grenadier Perk that failed to slow enemies affected by explosives, and resolving the issue where “Loading Player Stats” gets stuck. Players should anticipate modifications to munitions and utility boxes, supplying the maximum ammo for the primary and secondary weapons a player has equipped, while extra ammo for unselected ammo types will no longer be given out.
In Warzone, the meat shield ability has been temporarily disabled in ranked play due to an ongoing investigation into a known exploit by Raven Software. Additionally, the developers have implemented measures to reduce randomness in Ranked mode, and buy stations will now consistently appear at specific locations. Future updates aim to rectify any dead spots on the map.
Players who enjoy Zombies won’t miss out on this update. Some bugs that surfaced with the latest map, Citadelle Des Morts, introduced during Season 1 Reloaded, have been addressed. These include a problem where players received an AFK warning despite being actively moving around the map, an issue causing players to be unable to enter the Final Encounter after loading a save following the acquisition of the four incantations, and an issue preventing light beams for obtaining the amulet from appearing if a player disconnected and rejoined a match while in a squad.
With each update, the Call of Duty team wraps things up by stating they’ve implemented stability improvements. Regrettably, it seems that lagging and microfreezing problems that have been ongoing in Black Ops 6 and Warzone since Season 1’s debut remain unresolved. After today’s patch, Reddit users are still reporting occasional 1-2 second freezes during gameplay. Furthermore, the series is facing criticism as players find that some rewards for the Merry Mayhem event, along with other challenges, have been providing AI-generated images for loading screens, call cards, and similar content.
Right now, you can play Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Xbox, PlayStation, as well as computers (Steam, Battle.net, and Microsoft Store). Additionally, it’s accessible through Xbox Game Pass on both PC, consoles, and even via the cloud.
