As a travel enthusiast who’s seen more than a few sunsets and sunrises, I must say that The Road Trip on Paramount+ has taken me on quite an extraordinary journey. It’s not every day you get to live vicariously through a character while soaking up the sunshine from the comfort of your couch!
In this captivating six-part series on Paramount+, The Road Trip, I found myself basking in an abundance of sunshine that seemed almost tangible through the screen. Inspired by Beth O’Leary’s beloved novel, the story centers around me, a lively 20-something named Addie, who’s been couch-surfing at my sister Deb’s place for two years following a heartbreaking breakup.
The story alternates between two different time periods: Addie and Dylan’s stormy road trip adventure across Spain and their chance encounter that blossomed into a romance in Málaga during a vacation; these events play out amidst beautiful mountain landscapes, scenic coastal drives, and charming pastel-hued villages. It’s like an enticing summer holiday, presented right before your eyes on the screen.

Tracking Addie’s footsteps across Gran Canaria, I find myself in the charming town of Maspalomas, basking in the consistent warmth of the Canary Islands sun. My accommodation is at Seaside Palm Beach (hotel-palm-beach.com), a luxurious coastal resort. Here, immaculate white umbrellas offer shade to leisurely retirees enjoying cocktails and puzzles. I take a dip in the turquoise pool and swim towards the tiny island within, only seeing palm trees with green crowns and clear skies around me.
In the evening hours, I take a leisurely walk through the quaint “Little Venice of the Canaries”, Puerto de Mogán. This enchanting marina is adorned with resplendent beauty at sunset, with the vibrant colors reflecting off the yachts on the shimmering water. The harbor front buzzes with lively restaurants and the enticing aroma of meat grilled over charcoal wafts through the air. The nearby streets are lined with white houses, their doors and windows adorned in vivid hues; flower-laden trellises add a touch of elegance. This location is steeped in romance – Addie and Dylan first met at a quaint local eatery here – making it easy to understand why Gran Canaria, with its vibrant, tantalizing nightlife, was selected as the setting for their love story.
It’s a short drive from here to Restaurante 360, which boasts fine dining and a panoramic view of a lit-up Maspalomas (bohemia-grancanaria.com/es/restaurante-y-cocktail-bar). The place has an elegant ambience, with refined décor, but it’s the food that takes centre stage. The tasting menu has five main dishes, followed by dessert – all paired with wine sourced from the Canaries. The crispy octopus croquettes, wrapped in a salty serrano ham and coated in a rich piquillo sauce, are delightfully crunchy, while the lamb shank terrine is so soft it flakes under the slightest pressure from my fork.
In the morning following, I bid farewell to Maspalomas and venture into Scenic Drive country, navigating twisting roads that snake through towering mountains. The scenery mirrors a popular TV series, with an arid landscape serving as a stark contrast against the brilliant blue sky. At a vantage point, Mirador Astronómico de la Degollada de las Yeguas (it’s prominently shown in the show), I pause to marvel at a rocky valley traversed by a dusty, zigzagging road below. The landscape transforms as I ascend, revealing undulating hills that resemble an alpine range. Stepping out of the vehicle, I savor the peacefulness as clouds lazily drift over the mountain chain.
At my next destination on the tour, I’ll be visiting the peaceful village of Agüimes, where a fragment of “The Road Trip” is being shot in a section that’s been sealed off. This scene is near to the climax of the story, and the tranquil setting clashes with the escalating tension between Addie and Dylan. A grand, gleaming church stands tall – filming pauses for a moment as its bells chime.
My last stop on my trip is to Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, where cast and crew stayed during filming (and some scenes from the show were filmed here as well). I find myself particularly captivated by the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Ana de Tenerife, which towers grandly at the center of a square. Its exterior is simple yet refined, but upon approaching it, I marvel at the complex patterns of the stained glass windows and how the light dances with their vibrant hues.
1) Watching people in the square is just as delightful: An elderly couple share a bench, engrossed in discussion, while youngsters playfully move around, chatting and giggling; tourists capture moments. For dinner, I dine at Casa Montesdeoca (restaurantecasamontesdeoca.com), boasting fairy lights adorning its stone walls and tables nestled amid trees in the courtyard. The following day, I bid farewell to the relentless sunshine and journey back to the UK. Instead of long, leisurely lunches with chilled white wine, I’ll have to make do with watching The Road Trip for a taste of vitamin sea.
