It’s been verified by Microsoft that there’s a glitch in Windows 11 that might stop certain users from logging into their devices using the Windows Hello feature, specifically when attempting to use facial recognition as a security measure.
Fortunately, it seems that only a particular group of Windows 11 users are experiencing this issue. Microsoft has termed this problem as an “exceptional scenario,” mentioning that it occurs exclusively after installing a specific Windows 11 update and either performing a Push button reset or using the Reset this PC feature while choosing to Keep my Files and Local Install.
That’s a pretty specific set of circumstances for the bug to appear.
Microsoft outlined the issue in a support document:
It has been noticed that a particular problem with Windows Hello is affecting devices that have specific security settings activated. After applying the latest update and opting for a ‘Reset this PC’ from ‘Settings’ > ‘System’ > ‘Recovery’, choosing to ‘Keep my Files’ and ‘Local install’, some users may experience trouble logging into their Windows services using facial recognition or PIN. Users might encounter a Windows Hello error message stating “An issue occurred and your PIN is currently unavailable. Click here to set up your PIN again” or “Something went wrong during face setup”.
Currently, at the point of release, there’s no solution available for the Windows Hello glitch. However, there is a viable workaround in place.
If your computer encounters the problem, you have the option to access it via a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Additionally, you can re-establish your facial recognition settings.
A passwordless future?
Microsoft encourages switching from traditional passwords to innovative methods like passkeys for authentication. One method they suggest for password-free identity verification is by utilizing Windows Hello.
Microsoft aims to eliminate passwords entirely, and as part of this mission, they’ve revamped the login process for Microsoft accounts. This updated design prioritizes a seamless passwordless setup experience.
When technical issues such as the Windows Hello problem arise, one might ponder whether moving towards passwordless authentication is advisable. However, it’s important to note that should Windows Hello encounter any problems, you can always resort to entering a PIN for signing into your computer instead.
To use Windows Hello, it’s also necessary to establish a personal identification number (PIN). This added step is designed to provide you with a means to access your computer if Windows Hello encounters any problems during login.
