Tonight’s NXT show kicked off with the freshly crowned champion Oba Femi, yet there was a notable void on the stage that might be linked to some recent remarks, as regular WWE commentator Corey Graves was absent from his usual spot in the commentary team. Despite earlier hints suggesting he had comments for tonight’s episode, Graves didn’t show up.
WWE has made some changes in its commentary lineup: Michael Cole and Pat McAfee are now calling Monday Night Raw, while Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett handle SmackDown. Corey Graves initially appeared as a temporary addition to the team of Vic Joseph and Booker T during NXT’s New Year’s Evil event. However, this wasn’t just a one-time arrangement; it was later announced that Graves would be a permanent part of the NXT commentary team from now on. This news didn’t seem to please Corey Graves.
On X, Graves appears to have responded to the upheaval, stating, “Picture pursuing your dream relentlessly. Then being informed (not choosing) that you can no longer physically chase your dream. You then focus on something related to your dream and become quite skilled at it. And then, when it’s time to reap the rewards of your hard work, being told you’re not famous enough for your role. This might explain where I’ve been recently.
11 hours ago, Graves posted on Twitter, “I’ve got a lot to share. Make sure you tune in to #WWENXT tonight on @TheCW TONIGHT.” This statement hinted at an unexpected turn of events, as it was later reported that Graves wouldn’t appear on NXT‘s upcoming episode. Interestingly, during the setup, only two chairs were seen at the commentary desk.
The situation regarding Graves appears to be somewhat confusing at the moment. A recent report from Fightful Select has shed some light on it, but they can’t yet definitively say whether this is part of a scripted storyline or a genuine issue. Those close to Graves are suggesting that it’s authentic, and according to Fightful, Graves was displeased and frustrated about his move to NXT last week.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I recently came across some intriguing news from PWInsider. According to their report, it wasn’t just speculation that Graves was absent from the camera or backstage; he was reportedly spotted at the Orlando airport departing the area. Now, you might wonder why this is significant because Graves doesn’t reside in Orlando – he calls Pittsburgh home. To add to the mystery, by 3:45 PM EST, he wasn’t present at NXT rehearsals either.
Among talent and production members within NXT who were questioned about the matter, none had prior knowledge that Graves would be transitioning to NXT, and many expressed surprise upon seeing him at New Year’s Evil. One individual speculated that his presence might have been due to being in town for the event rather than a permanent relocation.
There are speculations suggesting he might reappear in live wrestling performances soon, following certain storylines. This coincides with the past events he mentioned on Twitter. However, it’s unclear whether this is genuine discontent about not being part of the Raw or SmackDown commentary crews, or something else entirely. At this point, we can only guess when and where he might return to our TV screens again.
